Note: | Hippolyte-Louis Garnier: An early nineteenth century French painter, miniaturist, lithographer and engraver, Hippolyte Garnier began his studies in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1819. After studying several years there (primarily under Hersent) he began creating lithographs after such painters as Eugene Deveria, Ary Scheffer and others. Hippolyte-Louis Garnier exhibited his paintings and works of original graphic art at the Paris Salon from 1822 to 1853. |
Throughout his career, Hippolyte-Louis Garnier excelled as a miniature painter of portraits. In this capacity his painted the portraits of many of France's leading individuals of the era. After painting his portraits he would sometimes create a lithograph or engraving based upon his own design. Such is the case with this portrait entitled, S.A.R. le Mme. La Dauphine, Duchesse D' Angouleme ('The Crown Princess, Duchess of Angouleme').
A Biographical Note: Marie Therese Charlotte (1778-1851) was the Crown Princess and Duchess of Angouleme. She was the daughter of King Louis XVI and wife of Louis Antoine of Artois, the Duke of Angouleme. During the time this portrait was created she was in line to potentially become the Queen of France. This possibility came to an abrupt end in 1830 when her father-in-law abdicated the French throne.
Marie Therese Charlotte was also the recipient of a famous and not at all complementary comment from none other than Napoleon Bonaparte. He once stated that she was "the only man in her family."
