Morton Lloyd Garchik 'Morton Garchik': A twentieth century American painter, illustrator, woodcut
artist and writer, Morton Lloyd Garchik first began his art training at the Art School of the Brooklyn Museum and later at the School of Visual Arts in New York. His art has been the subject of exhibitions
in museums and gallieries throulghout the continental United States and Honolulu. He had one-man exhibitions in New York, Chicago and Toronto, Canada and also participated in Group exhibitions at the 38th Northwest Printmakers International which was held at the Seattle Art Museum and the Portland Art Museum, followed by the Ohio University National and the Springfield College National exhibitions and elswhere. Morton Garchik received several awards and prizes during his artistic career, winning first prize in Drawing (1955), and 2nd price for Illustration in (1956), as well as the 1965 Olivet College Print Collection Purchase award. Garchik is also well known for his book illustration
art. Besides illustrating many fine novels of fiction and children's literature,
Morton Garchik authored two important books upon art instruction, Art
Fundamentals: Basics of Drawing, Painting, Sculpture and Printmaking (1979) and Creative
Visual Thinking (1981). |

Many of Morton Garchik's original prints were published
by the Associated American Artists of New York. From the 1930's to
the mid 1980's the Associated American Artists was a leading publisher
of American lithographs, etchings and woodcuts. "Wayfaring"
was commissioned by this publisher.
The AAA catalog number is 1969-07, and it is 1936 in Windisch & Cole. |

In "Wayfaring",
Morton Garchik employs color blocks of brown, yellow, orange and red to
create a delightful fantasy scene. As this is an 'artist proof impression'
the size of the edition is currently unknown, but most of the artist's
original prints were published in editions of one hundred, or less. |

deckled margins as published around the above date. Signed, titled, and
annotated, 'Artist Proof', by the artist in pencil along the
lower margin. Containing two vertical crease lines within the image else
a vibrantly printed, full color impression and in excellent condition throughout.
"Wayfaring" represents a prime, original example of the highly innovative
and imaginative art of Morton Garchik. |
