William Gale - The May Wreath

The May Wreath

William Gale's original etching, The May Wreath, was printed and published by Day & Son, London, for the Junior Etching Club's Passages from Modern English Poets. In total forty-seven original etchings were contributed by members for the portfolio. As was often the case in the mid nineteenth century Britain, literature and art were often placed side by side. Wood engraving and etching served to illustrate various passages of prose or poetry and anthologies such as Passages contained contributions from various authors and artists. William Gale's The May Wreath illustrates a poem of the same title by Felicia Hemans (1793-1835). The last stanza is quoted below:

"Oh! happy child, in thy fawn-like glee,
What is remembrance or thought to thee?
Fill thy bright locks with those gifts of Spring,
O'er thy green pathway thy colours fling;
Bind them in chaplet and wild festoon,
What if to droop and to perish soon;
Nature hath mines of such wealth, and thou
Never wilt prize its delights as now." *Felicia Hemans

An original etching, The May Wreath is printed upon wove paper and with full margins as published in Passages from Modern English Poets in 1862. It bears the artist's name, "W. Gale" and the publisher's date and name, "London, Published December 1st, 1861 by Day & Sons, Lith. to the Queen" along the lower margin of the plate. It is a fine, original example of the etched art created by the British artist, William Gale.

Note: William Gale: A London painter and etcher of genre scenes and historical and biblical compositions, William Gale was a student of the Royal Academy Schools. He exhibited his art at both the British Institution and the Royal Academy from 1844 to 1893. Well traveled, William Gale visited Italy (1851), Syria (1862), Palestine (1867) and Algeria (1876-77). A large number of his works portrays the peoples of these regions.
  Earlier works by William Gale were usually executed in the Pre-Raphaelite style. Such is clearly the case in the original etching, The May-Wreath.
  Today the art of William Gale will be found in such collections as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the British Museum and the Tate Museum, London. The Philadelphia Museum of Art includes an impression of "The May Wreath" in its permanent collection, Accession Number: 185-52-21972.
 

William Gale was a full member of the Junior Etching Club (1857-1864), an institution that greatly contributed to the revival of etching in England. Other members included the British artists, Sir John Everett Millais, Sir Francis Powell, Henry Moore, Charles Keene, Matthew James Lawless, Walter Severn, Henry Stacy Marks, Frederick Smallfield, Henry Clarence Whaite and James McNeill Whistler. The Junior Etching Club often published their members’ etchings and most member artists contributed to their most important portfolio, Passages from Modern English Poets, printed and published during the years 1861 and 1862.

  Felicia Dorothea Browne Hemans (1793 -1835): A poet and writer born in Liverpool in 1793, Felicia Hemans, nee Browne, published her first book of poems in 1808 at the age of fourteen. Works published by Hemans include, England and Spain; or Valour and Patriotism (1808), The Domestic Affections and other Poems (1812), The Restoration of the Works of Art to Italy (1816), Modern Greece (1817), The Vespers of Palermo (1823), the only play to be preformed, Hymns on the Works of Nature, for the Use of Children (1827), Records of Woman and Songs of the Affections (1830), and many other poems and works dealing with concerns of women and children. Felicia Hemans died in Dublin, Ireland at the age of forty one in 1835. In 1836, "Memorial of Mrs. Hemans", with Illustrations of Her Literary Character from her Private Correspondence by Henry F. Chorley was published in two volumes by Saunders and Otley, Conduit Street. This original etching entitled, The May Wreath illustrates a poem of the same title by Felicia Hemans.
  Day & Son, London: Some of the most ambitious and accomplished printmaking projects of the Victorian era were launched by the publishers, Day & Son. The firm began in the mid 1820's under the title of 'Day & Hague' and assumed its more familiar name 'Day & Son, London' in 1845. William Gale's original etching, The May Wreath was published by 'Day & Son, London' between 1861-62. Throughout their early years they printed and published works of art dealing with a wide range of subjects, such as, hunting scenes, genre depictions, landscape scenes and topographical views.

Condition: Printed upon wove paper and with full margins as published in Passages from Modern English Poets in 1862. Bearing the artist's name, "W. Gale" and the publisher's date and name, "London, Published December 1st, 1861 by Day & Sons, Lith. to the Queen" along the lower margin of the plate. It also bears the plate's number "38" to the upper right corner of the margin above the image. This impression is in excellent condition throughout without a trace of staining or fading. The May Wreath represents a fine, original example of the Victorian era art of William Gale.

The 'Junior Etching Club' (1857-1864)
The Junior Etching Club (1857-1864), was an institution that greatly contributed to the revival of Etching in England. Members included such prominent British artists as, Sir John Everett Millais, James McNeill Whistler, Sir Francis Powell, Henry Moore, Sir John Tenniel, Charles Samuel Keene, Joseph Clark, John Wright Oakes, Walter Severn, William Gale, Frederick Smallfield, Henry Clarence Whaite, Matthew James Lawless, Arthur James Lewis, Henry Stacy Marks, Charles Rossiter, Vincent Bury, Lord G. Fitzgerald, J. R. Clayton, John Sleigh, and Lord Gerald Fitzgerald. The Junior Etching Club often published their members’ etchings and all of the above named artists contributed to their portfolio, Passages from Modern English Poets, first published by Day & Son Limited, Lithographers & Publishers, London, 1862. In total, that publication contained forty-seven original etchings. The Junior Club also issued, another important publication in 1858, Passages from the Poems of Thomas Hood published by E. Gambart & Co, London. It was also illustrated by its members and contained thirty-four plates.
