Furuya Korin - Bamboo Shoots Motif Design

Bamboo Shoots (Motif Design)

Furuya Korin's original woodcut, Bamboo Shoots (Motif Design), was published in October, 1907. Furuya Korin specialized in creating original woodcuts for pattern books, which were albums depicting usually abstracted designs from nature. This genre originated in the 1660's with designs for kimonos, but hit its peak in the early twentieth century and showcased the Meiji printing techniques of the time. Bamboo Shoots (Motif Design) is printed upon Japanese mulberry (rice) paper and with full margins as published by Yamada Unsodo, Kyoto in 1907 for the (Album of Bamboo Motif Designs). It is a fine, original example of the art and designs by the Japanese artist, Furuya Korin.

Note: Furuya Korin: A master meiji era painter and designer of woodblock-printed books, Furuya Korin was highly influenced by the Rinpa (Rimpa) movement of Ogata Korin (1658-1716). Korin was born in the Village of Kaizu in Shinga Prefecture. While in Kyoto (Tokyo), he first studied under the Shijo-style painter (Maruyama-Shijo school), Suzuki Mannen (1868-1893). Later, Korin studied with the director and Rinpa revivalist Kamisaka Sekka (1866-1942), the leading Western-style-painter, Asai Chu (1856-1907) and others. In 1897, Furuya Korin received first prize for painting at the second annual Shinko Bijutsu Tenrankai (Exhibition of New and Old Art). In 1905, Furuya Korin began to teach at the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts, and five years later he became an assistant professor. During his career, Korin was also a leading designer of the 'gafu' (picture album), 'Ehon' (picture book), also known as, woodblock-printed book. Bamboo Shoots (Motif Design) hails from the Album of Bamboo Motif Designs published by Yamada Unsodo in 1907.
Western art critics have long laid claim that abstract art is a European invention. The truth is, however, that long before the rise of Picasso and his contemporaries, Japanese artists were creating and printing woodcut designs containing many abstract elements and utilizing them for practical purposes such as patterns for kimonos.
Furuya Korin created several important pattern albums during the first decade of the twentieth century. Three such works include, a series of four orihon albums with floral and vegetable motifs (1905), a series of four orihon albums with pine tree themes (1905), an orihon album containing fifty designs with bamboo theme, many printed with metallic pigments (1907,) and others. These three sets were published by Yamada Unsodo, Kyoto. Bamboo Shoots (Motif Design) hails from the 1907 set illustrating bamboo themes. Today such institutions as the British Museum include examples of his woodcuts in their permanent collections.
This original Japanese woodcut depicting bamboo shoots comes from a 1907 pattern book of bamboo motifs by Furuya Korin. The artist's intent was to create themes and patterns which could be used on textiles and other materials, or to be enjoyed as distinct works of art. The complete publication, issued in Tokyo in 1907, consisted of fifty woodcuts woodcuts printed with extensive use of metallic pigments, displaying a wide range of textures and colors (including gold and silver) and designed in either a horizontal or vertical format. These original woodcuts are clearly splendid examples of early twentieth century Japanese design and art.
Furuya Korin's 'gafu' (picture albums) are sometimes found listed under another artist name, Furutani Korin.
