Furuya Korin: A master meiji era painter and designer of woodblock-printed books, Furuya Korin was highly influenced by the Rinpa (Rimpa) movement of Ogata Korin (1658-1716). Korin was born in the Village of Kaizu in Shinga Prefecture. While in Kyoto (Tokyo), he first studied under the Shijo-style painter (Maruyama-Shijo school), Suzuki Mannen (1868-1893). Later, Korin studied with the director and Rinpa revivalist Kamisaka Sekka (1866-1942), the leading Western-style-painter, Asai Chu (1856-1907) and others. In 1897, Furuya Korin received first prize for painting at the second annual Shinko Bijutsu Tenrankai (Exhibition of New and Old Art). In 1905, Furuya Korin began to teach at the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts, and five years later he became an assistant professor. During his career, Korin was also a leading designer of the 'gafu' (picture album), 'Ehon' (picture book), also known as, woodblock-printed book. A Pattern of Design (Bamboo Motif) hails from the Album of Bamboo Motif Designs published by Yamada Unsodo in 1907. |

Westerners like to claim that abstract art is their invention.
The truth is, however, that long before the advent of Picasso and his
contemporaries, the Japanese were creating and printing brilliant abstract
designs. and utilizing them for practical purposes such as textiles.
This woodcut comes from a 1907 portfolio by Furuya Korin. The artist's
intent was to produce themes and patterns to be printed on clothing and
other materials. The complete publication consisted of fifty woodcuts printed with extensive use of metallic pigments, displaying a wide variety of colour (including silver)
and designed in either a horizontal or vertical format. |
|
Furuya Korin created several important pattern albums during the first decade of the twentieth century. Three such works include, a series of four orihon albums with floral and vegetable motifs (1905), a series of four orihon albums with pine tree themes (1905), an orihon album containing fifty designs with bamboo theme, many printed with metallic pigments (1907,) and others. These three sets were published by Yamada Unsodo, Kyoto. Bamboo Shoots (Motif Design) hails from the 1907 set illustrating bamboo themes. Today such institutions as the British Museum include examples of his woodcuts in their permanent collections. |

This original Japanese woodcut depicting bamboo stalks
hails from a 1907 pattern book of bamboo motifs by Furuya Korin. The artist's intent was to create
themes and patterns which could be used on textiles and other materials,
or to be enjoyed as distinct works of art. The complete publication,
issued in Tokyo in 1907, consisted of fifty
woodcuts, displaying a wide range of textures and colors (including gold
and silver) and designed in either a horizontal or vertical format. These
original woodcuts are clearly splendid examples of early twentieth century
Japanese design and art. |
