One may reasonably date Christian Friedrich Fritzsch's original engraving, "Petrus Leopoldus, Archidux Austriae" (Peter Leopold, Prince (Leader) of Austria), to around the year, 1755. Peter Leopold, the third son of Emperor Francis I, was born in 1747, and the boy depicted here appears to be no more than ten years of age. Peter Leopold became Emperor in 1790. This original C. F. Peter Leopold, Prince of Austria: Peter Leopold (Vienna, 1747-1792) was the third son of Emperor Francis I. In 1765 he succeeded his father as Grand Duke of Tuscany. For the following 25 years he resided in Florence and brought many political, economic and administrative reforms to the city. In 1775 Peter Leopold founded Florence's Museo di Fisca e Storia Naturale. With the death of his brother, Joseph II, in 1790, Peter Leopold became Emperor. He quickly put down the revolt in the Austria Netherlands and negotiated the Convention of Reichenbach, with Prussia. In 1791 Peter Leopold ended the war with the Turks and reacquired Belgrade and Walachia.
Apart from these accomplishments, Peter Leopold strove to aid his ill-fated sister in Paris, Marie Antoinette. In February of 1792 he signed the Treaty of Pillnitz, which united Prussia and Austria against the French. Less than a month later, however, he suddenly died. Peter Leopold's son, Francis II, succeeded him as Emperor.
