Note:	Myles Birket Foster created his first original etching in 1880. H. M. Cundall writes, "The success of this plate naturally brought requests from other publishers for etchings, and Foster, although his time was fully occupied in water-colour painting, was persuaded to execute a few more of them -- "An Old English Mill" (1881) and "The Little Shepherds" (1890) appeared in "The Art Journal". He also etched a few other plates, amongst which may be mentioned: "The Wandering Minstrel" (1881), published by Messrs. Dowdeswell; ‘Crossing the Brook" (1883), by Messrs. Tooth; a reproduction of the painting "The Street, Cookham", by Fred Walker, A.R.A., for Mr. T. Maclean (1888); and "Home Sweet Home" (1891), by the Fine Art Society." *
	Myles Birket Foster: One of England’s greatest nineteenth century artists of rustic and pastoral scenes, Myles Birket Foster held an equally high reputation as a painter and illustrator. Foster came to London at the age of five and about ten years later became an apprentice to Ebenezer Landells, a wood engraver who had studied under Thomas Bewick. As an apprentice, Birket Foster produced drawings for both "Punch" and the "Illustrated London News".
	Birket Forster then worked as an illustrative draughtsman under Henry Vizetelly before setting out on his own in 1846. During the following years, Myles Birket Foster produced many great landscapes (particularly in watercolors) and illustrated books. He was elected an Associate of the Old Watercolour Society, in 1860, and was a full member of the Royal Watercolour Society (1862). The Victoria and Albert Museum, London, includes an extensive collection of Myles Birket Foster's art and related manuscripts in its permanent collection.
	As the introductory quotation explains, etching was not a primary artistic medium for Myles Birket Foster. In total he created only about six original etchings, all within a ten year period dating from 1881 to 1991. Yet, as one can see from "An Old English Mill", his work in this medium contains all the charm and grace of his work in watercolour.
	"An Old English Mill" was published by London, J.S. Virtue & Co. Limited for The Art Journal in 1881. "The Art Journal" was an important late nineteenth and early twentieth century annual dedicated to the visual arts. Such leading artists as Axel Haig, J. M. W. Whistler, Seymour Haden, Herbert Von Herkomer, Alfred Brunet-Debaines, John MacWhirter, Miles Birket Foster and others. Birket Foster contributed two original plates to The Art Journal, London over several decades.
