Note: | Henry Chapman Ford 'Henry C. Ford': An important nineteenth century California painter, etcher and illustrator, Henry Chapman Ford studied art techniques in Paris and Florence from 1857 to 1860. Not long after his return to America he served in the Union forces during the early period of the Civil War. After a span of one year, however, H. C. Ford was discharged due to a physical disability. Ford then moved to Chicago where he helped to found the Chicago Academy of Design (1866). Henry C. Ford, in fact, served as the first president of this institution. |
Five years later marked the Great Chicago Fire. The Academy, along with most of H. C. Ford's early art, was lost in the flames. In 1882 the Academy re-opened under the present name of the Art Institute of Chicago.
In 1875 Henry Chapman Ford permanently settled in Santa Barbara, California. Ford then began making trips throughout the state to sketch many of the area's historic Franciscan Missions. These served as the beginning for his series of etchings depicting these missions. They were published in 1883 and exhibited at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. H. C. Ford was thus responsible for awakening California's interest in its Spanish heritage as well as helping to influence the restoration of these historically important buildings.
Until his death in 1894, Henry Chapman Ford both worked and taught art techniques from his studio in Santa Barbara. Today examples of Ford's fine art are included in the following collections; Stanford University Museum, San Diego Historical Society, University of California at Berkeley, Ventura County Museum of History & Art and the Oakland Museum. The University of Iowa Libraries lists an impression of A Southern California Glen in its permanent collection.
