Jean-Louis Forain

Danseuses Dans Leur Loge (Dancers in Their Dressing Room)

Jean-Louis Forain's original etching, "Danseuses Dans Leur Loge" (Dancers in Their Dressing Room) was created by the French 19th century artist around 1876. It depicts two women dressing for a performance. Only a hand-full of impressions of "Danseuses Dans Leur Loge" were initially printed at the time. A full edition, and that consisting of only twenty five impressions, was not printed until 1912. This edition was both published and printed by Forain's printer, M. G. Pellet. This particular impression is printed upon hand-made Japon paper with large, full margins as published by "M. G. Pellet" in Paris in 1912. It is signed in the plate by Jean-Louis Forain in the upper left corner. "Danseuses Dans Leur Loge" is definately a masterwork of Forain's early, impressionistic period. The University of Michigan Museum of Art includes an impression of "Danseuses Dans Leur Loge" in its permanent collection

Title: (Dancers in Their Dressing Room)
Artist: Forain, Jean Louis (Reims, 1852 - Paris, 1931)
Date: c. 1876 (M. G. Pellet Edition of 1912 )
Medium: Original Etching & Drypoint
Printer: M. G. Pellet
Note: Jean-Louis Forain: One of France's greatest artists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Jean-Louis Forain was equally accomplished as a painter, watercolourist, lithographer and as an etcher. Forain's accomplishments as an original etcher may be classified into two eras; the early period (1875 - 1890), in which he created thirty etchings or drypoints, and the later period (1902 - 1923), in which he produced one hundred and forty-five etchings.
In 1876 Jean-Louis Forain was a young member of an artistic group that frequently met at the Cafe de la Nouvelle Athenes at the Place Pigalle, Paris. Other members and associates included such artists as Edouard Manet, Edgar Degas, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Sisley, Pissarro and sometimes Monet and Paul Cezanne. Cezanne showed great interest in Forain's early work and kept a number of the young artist's illustrations pinned to the wall of his studio. The most important friendship formed in this period of Forain's career, however, was with Edgar Degas (1834 - 1917). The two artists worked together on many occasions at this time, painting and drawing dancers, nudes and scenes from Parisian theaters and cafes.
In terms of outlook and subject matter there is little doubt that Degas influenced Forain, as one can see in, Danseuses Dans Leur Loge. Yet even at this point there are strong differences in both temperament and approach between the two artists: "Degas was interested in fugitive appearances, movement and the purity of line, while Forain concentrated more on character, revealing gestures, social situations and the expressions of his subjects." *
"Danseuses Dans Leur Loge" is a masterwork of Jean-Louis Forain's early, impressionistic period. A. Faxon writes of 'Danseues' that, "The affinities of subject matter between this and the work of Degas is evident, as well as an interest in showing subjects from everyday life in an intimate setting, which Manet and the impressionists were following during this period. There is a new interest in light effects in this etching as Forain differentiates between the light on the central figure and on the dressing table, and the shadowed areas below the central figures." *
Initial impressions of Jean-Louis Forain's earliest etchings are almost impossible to find. Only a hand-full of impressions of "Danseuses Dans Leur Loge" were printed at the time. A full edition, and that consisting of only twenty five impressions, was not printed until 1912. This edition was both published and printed by Jean-Louis Forain's printer, M. G. Pellet. A final printing of 200 impressions was undertaken by the Galerie R. G. Michel in Paris in 1948. The later edition was printed on a white, wove paper, while impressions from the much earlier and more scarce Pellet edition were printed on a toned, Japon paper. Besides being a much better printing, these earlier impressions are believed to have been actually inspected and approved by Jean-Louis Forain. This original etching is thus of much greater value because it was an earlier, Pellet printing
