A Mayence "- Est - ce vous fiendrez demain - Oui, pendant 30 ans"

Jean Louis Forain's original lithograph, A Mayence was created by the artist in 1918. During the First World War Forain was regularly commissioned by both Le Figaro and L'Opinion for illustrative art. Two hundred of these were drawn upon lithographic transfer paper and printed in numbered editions of 300 each for a portfolio entitled, De la Marne au Rhin. This is one of the original transfer lithographs. A Mayence is printed upon hand-made laid paper bearing the 'Arches M B M' watermark and with full margins. This impression is signed and dated in the stone by Jean Louis Forain, and numbered '84/300' and signed with the 'f' monogramme in pencil. In this scene, a man asks a First World War soldier "-Est - ce vous fiendrez demain" The soldier replies, "- Oui, pendant 30 ans". A loose translation reads; (Will you come tomorrow? Yes, in 30 years)

Note:	Jean-Louis Forain: One of France's greatest artists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Jean-Louis Forain was equally accomplished as a painter, watercolourist, lithographer and as an etcher. Forain's formal education was not as important to his early development as was his contact with young fellow artists in Paris. In 1876 Forain was a member of an artistic group that frequently met at the Cafe de la Nouvelle Athenes at the Place Pigalle. Other members and associates included such emerging artists as Manet, Degas, Renoir, Sisley, Pissarro and sometimes Monet and Cezanne. Cezanne showed great interest in the artist's early work and kept a number of Forain's illustrations pinned to the wall of his studio. The most important friendship Forain formed, however, was with Edgar Degas (1834-1917). The two artists often worked together painting and drawing dancers, nudes and scenes from the theatre.
	In terms of outlook and subject matter there is little doubt that Degas stood as a primary influence upon Forain. Yet even in Forain's early work there are strong differences in the approach of these artists. A. Faxon writes, "Degas was interested in fugitive appearances, movement and the purity of line, while Forain concentrated more on character, revealing gestures, social situations and the expressions of his subjects." * This is most particularly true of Forain's later great art such as A Mayence.
	In 1915, at the age of sixty-two, Forain joined the French army and became a member of the camouflage corps. He was in the trenches during the First World War and saw the devastation firsthand. During the war he was regularly commissioned by both Le Figaro and L'Opinion for illustrative art. Two hundred of these were drawn upon lithographic transfer paper and printed in numbered editions of 300 each for a portfolio entitled, De la Marne au Rhin. A Mayence is one of these original transfer lithographs. All the prints from this portfolio deal with the many aspects of war and most contain topical captions. It is in art such as A Mayence that one sees Forain's great genius and his spiritual affinity with France's other great social commentator, Daumier.The words written by Forain within the lower left side if the image read; "- Est - ce vous fiendrez demain - Oui, pendant 30 ans"
	The large majority of the lithographs from the De la Marne au Rhin series are not hand signed by Forain himself. This impression, however, bears Forain's 'f' monogramme in pencil beside the numeration.
