Frances Amicia de Biden Footner 'F. A. de Biden Footner': An early
twentieth century English portrait painter and watercolourist, Frances
Amicia de Biden Footner was educated at Cheltenham College and studied
art in Liverpool, London and in Europe on a Royal Academy scholarship.
She began exhibiting her portraits in 1900 and during the following years
her work was included in exhibitions in Dusseldorf, Germany, Liverpool,
Manchester, Bath, Oldham and in London at both the Royal Academy and at
the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours. |

During her career Frances de Biden Footner specialized in portraits
of academic scholars, particularly at the colleges of Oxford University,
Royal Holloway College, Girton College and University College, London.
She also created portraits in both watercolour and graphite of leading
individuals of the day. Perhaps her most famous works are two 1907 portraits
of Florence Nightingale. They are now housed in the permanent collection
of the Florence Nightingale Museum, London. |

Attribution of the Sitter: As much of the art of Frances
A. de Biden Footner portrayed prominent university scholars, the identity
of the sitter is in all likelihood, Sir Francis James Wylie. Francis James
Wylie (1865-1952) was a Fellow of Brasenose College, Oxford. His scholarly
research was mainly in the field of English literature and he was co-author
of the book, The Poetry of Mathew Arnold; A Commentary. F. J. Wylie also
received a prestigious honourary degree from Bowdoin College in 1933.
It is not known what year he was knighted. |

Condition: |
Drawn upon wove paper with large, full margins. Faint staining
(well away from the actual drawing) exists in the outer left margin from
a previous framing effort. Signed, 'F. A. de Biden Footner, 1935', in
graphite to the lower left. Also signed by the sitter, 'F. J. Wylie',
in pen within the image to the lower right. A beautifully drawn portrait
and in excellent condition throughout. Portrait of Sir Francis James Wylie
represents a superb, original example of the portrait art of Frances Amicia
de Biden Footner. |
