Charles Francois Flipart

Charles Francois Flipart - La Colombe Cherie

La Colombe Cherie

Charles Francois Flipart's original engraving and etching, "La Colombe Cherie" is printed on eighteenth hand-made, laid paper as published in Paris by Crepy around 1760. "La Colombe Cherie" is a fine, original example of the art created by the French artist, Charles Flipart and of the estampe gallant prints.

Title: La Colombe Cherie
Engraver: Flipart, Charles-Francois (Paris, 1730 - 1773)
Designer: Careme
Date: c. 1760
Medium: Original Engraving & Etching
Publisher: Crepy, Paris
Note: Charles-Francois Flipart 'Charles Flipart': the brother of Jean Jacques Flipart (1719-1782) and the son of Jean Charles Flipart (1683-1751), Charles-Francois Flipart came from one of France's most illustrious families of eighteenth century engravers. This accomplished family engraved many of the finest works of art after the designs of contemporary French artists, such as Le Brun, Greuze, Boucher and Careme. Studying under his father, Charles-Francois Flipart gained his reputation for his adept combinations of the engraved and etched lines which created soft and silvery textures. His best engravings are said to be those after Fragonard, Boucher and Careme.
Eighteenth century French engravings from the period preceeding the Revolution constitute an interesting chapter to the history of art. Termed, "Estampes Gallants", these beautiful engravings depicted a world of grace, opulence and lush sensuality. Most, in fact, contained elements of sexuality. The political and social upheavals or post-revolutionary Europe forever put an end to this seductive art. Original examples of "Estampes Gallants" are now very scarce and always in great demand.
