Sir William Russell Flint: One of Britain's most famous twentieth
century artists, Sir William Russell Flint was an accomplished watercolourist,
illustrator and printmaker. Educated at Edinburgh's Royal Institute of
Art, William Russell Flint settled in London in 1900. He first worked as an illustrative
artist on the staff of the Illustrated London News (1903-1907) before
turning almost exclusively to the medium of watercolour, particularly
for the illustration of books. After 1920, Russell Flint gained a world
wide reputation for his striking studies of the female nude. |
|
William Russell Flint was appointed an Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society
in 1914 (ARWS) and a full member in 1917 (RWS). In 1936 he was elected
President of that institution. He was also elected to the Royal Academy
in 1933 and was knighted by the King in 1947. |

The Temple of Juno at Girgenti, Sicily was commissioned by the
Medici Society in London. William Russell Flint's association to this publisher is well
documented. From 1905 to 1924, he produced some of his greatest illustrated
books for the Medici Society, including, The Song of Solomon, Mallory's,
Morte D'Arthur and Chaucer's, Canterbury Tales. Between
1914 and 1917 the Medici Society also commissioned several of Flint's
designs to be issued as individual colour lithographs. The Temple of
Juno at Girgenti, Sicily is one of these commissioned lithographs.
The Medici Society did not number their original prints in specific editions
but most are known to have been published in editions of 850 impressions
or less. And, due to the very large size of this original lithograph,
one would be safe to speculate that only a small number exist in such
fine condition as this example. |

both an important and scarce example of the early art of Sir William Russell
