Ernest Fiene

Ernest Fiene - New Snow

New Snow

Ernest Fiene's original lithograph, New Snow dates from 1946. In this year the Library of Congress awarded this lithograph its "First Purchase Prize." Impressions of New Snow are included in the collections of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Yale University and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

"In New Snow, I tried to symbolize the purity of New England design. It has been my impression that the early New England architects designed their churches with the thought of silhouetting them against the crisp winter background of snowy hills and struggling barren trees. The emphasis on purity of line and color embodies the cultural contributions of Man to Nature. This particular church is located in an isolated spot at a crossroad in the township of Eaton, Conn."

Coven writes that the church is still standing and may be seen in the village of Stepney, Connecticut. *

This original lithograph is printed upon fine wove paper and with full margins as published by the Associated American Artists in the limited edition of two hundred and fifty impressions. It is signed by the artist in pencil to the lower right margin.

Artist: Fiene, Ernest (Elberfeld, Germany, 1894 - Paris, 1965)
Date: 1946
Medium: Original Lithograph

Note: Ernest Fiene: A major American painter and lithographic artist, Ernest Fiene came to the United States as a young boy. He received his artistic education at the prestigious National Academy of Design as well as studying under Joseph Pennell and Charles Wheeler Locke at the Art Students’ League of New York. It was at this latter institution that Fiene first experimented in the art of lithography. This medium would play a major role in his entire artistic career.
Ernest Fiene’s first published lithographs date from the mid 1920’s. During the next two decades his lithographic still lifes, figure studies, landscape and city views were highly acclaimed throughout the United States. Along with such famous artists as Rockwell Kent and Lynd Ward, Fiene was at the forefront of American Art Deco -- the influential movement that emphasized elements of design and decoration. Thus his original lithographs today are as much in demand as when they were first created.
New Snow is an outstanding work of lithographic art contrasting the whiteness of the snow and the church with the greys and blacks of the stormy skies. Ernest Fiene's great feeling for the power of design is here seen to its fullest. The Library of Congress awarded this lithograph its "First Purchase Prize.". In 1949, three years later Ernest Fiene created another lithograph very similar to this one, however, aside from changes to the landscape surrounding the church, entitled, Colonial Church the image is in reverse.
Edition: New Snow was commissioned by the Associated American Artists of New York in 1946 in a sole, limited edition of 250 impressions. Since its creation in the mid 1930's the Associated American Artists commissioned original graphic art from such great masters as Grant Wood, Ernest Fiene, Thomas Hart Benton, Reginald Marsh, George Elmer Browne and others.
