Edward Loyal Field: A fine late nineteenth century
landscape etcher and painter, Edward Loyal Field studied art in Paris,
France, under Carolus-Duran. He returned to the United States in 1882
and both lived and worked in Manhattan for the balance of his career.
A full member of New York's prestigious Salmagundi Club, Field exhibited
his art in major exhibitions in Boston, Washington, Philadelphia, Chicago
and San Francisco. |

In the terminology of the Victorian era, this particular
impression of The Cottage by the Sea is known as a 'Remarque Proof'. Remarque
Proof impressions were the first to be printed from the plate and to signify
this would often contain a separate, miniature etching within the lower
margin. As well, only the handful of Remarques which were published would
include the artist's signature in pencil. These features would be absent
from the regular edition. These initial impressions thus were and are
at least twice the value. |
|
The Cottage by the Sea is one of E. L. Field's largest
and most impressive original etchings. Its careful delineation of detail
and wonderful sense of space makes it one of his best compositions. |
