Note: | Stephen James Ferris 'Stephen Ferris': An influential Philadelphia painter and etcher of portraits and figure studies, Stephen James Ferris studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy and in Paris, under Jean Leon Gerome. He achieved a considerable reputation for his art in both America and Europe and received the prestigious Fortuny Prize for the best portrait, Rome, 1876. Stephen James Ferris also served for twenty six years as the Instructor of Art at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women. |
Stephen Ferris's association with American art and artists is also important. His wife, Elizabeth Moran Stephen Ferris, was the sister of the artists, Thomas and Peter Moran. His son, Jean Leon Gerome Moran, became a much admired painter in the late nineteenth century. Stephen James Ferris was also a major connoisseur of fine prints, particularly etchings. Over two thousand of his collected prints are now housed at the Smithsonian Institution under the title of 'The Ferris Collection'.
Stephen Ferris's first published etching was created in 1875. During the following years he created many fine portraits and figure studies in this medium. Most were based upon the designs of the artists he admired most, such as, Gerome (his former teacher), Fortuny and Mouilleron. His finest prints are 'Orientalist' in nature and draw upon scenes of the middle and near East.
Jean-Leon Gerome (Haute-Saone, 1824 - Paris, 1904): One of France's most famous painters of the late nineteenth century, Jean-Leon Gerome came to Paris in 1841 and studied in the studio of Paul Delaroche and later under Charles Gleyre. His first major painting was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1847.
Jean-Leon Gerome first established himself as a leading neo-classicist painter. In 1855, however, he traveled to Turkey to make studies for a large, official commission. He became fascinated with the life and culture of the East and made many more subsequent journeys to Egypt (1857 to 1880), Turkey, Algiers and elsewhere. His paintings of these areas were shown extensively in France, Italy and Germany and gained for him membership into the Imperial Institute (1865), Knighthood in the Legion of Honour (1867), honourary membership to the British Royal Academy (1869) and the award of the Red Eagle, from the King of Prussia.
Jean-Leon Gerome was at the centre of the movement now known as 'Orientalism'. Briefly, Orientalist artists dedicated their work to the more exotic elements of Eastern culture and life. Before the era of Impressionism it was a most influential force throughout Europe and its presentation of rich colouration and exotic subjects affected even some abstract artists of the twentieth century.
Source: | The American Art Review. A Journal Devoted to the Practical theory, History, and Archaeology of Art: Inspired by the European etched art of James McNeill Whistler, Charles Meryon, Sir Francis Seymour Haden and others, a large number of American artists became seriously interested in the art of etching by 1875. A primary catalyst to the etching revival in America was the journal, American Art Review (1879 to 1881). Founded and edited by Sylvester Rosa Koehler it commissioned American artists for original etchings. Contributing etchers included such famous artists as Thomas and Peter Moran, Otto Bacher, J. M. Falconer, F. S. Church, Robert Swain Gifford, Henry Farrer, Samuel Coleman, Alfred Brennan and S. J. Ferris. |
Due mostly to its lavish production costs the journal lasted only slightly over two years. The finely printed etchings it produced, however, served as a cornerstone for the many great American etchings of the early twentieth century. Stephen Ferris contributed at least four original etchings to "The American Art Review". These include "Portrait of Mrs. J. Coleman Drayton" (1881), "Mrs. Philip Nicklin" (1879), "Devil's Way, Algiers" (1879) and "Old Clothes Dealer, Cairo" (1980).
