Stephen James Ferris's original etching, "Romeo and Juliet" is based upon the design of the nineteenth century Italian painter, Angelo Martinelli. It was commissioned in 1886 by Gebbie & Company in Philadelphia for a large portfolio entitled, “The Masterpieces of Italian Art”. Every etching from this collection (including Romeo and Juliet) was published in a limited edition of three hundred impressions and printed upon fine china paper. "Romeo and Juliet" is a fine, original example of the etched art created by the American artist Stephen Ferris. |

Note: | Stephen James Ferris 'Stephen Ferris': An influential Philadelphia painter and etcher of portraits and figure studies, Stephen James Ferris studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy and in Paris, under Jean Leon Gerome. He achieved a considerable reputation for his art in both America and Europe and received the prestigious Fortuny Prize for the best portrait, Rome, 1876. Ferris also served for twenty six years as the Instructor of Art at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women. |
Stephen Ferris’s association with American art and artists is important. His wife, Elizabeth Moran Ferris, was the sister of the artists, Thomas and Peter Moran. His son, Jean Leon Gerome Moran, became a well known painter in the late nineteenth century. Stephen Ferris was also a major connoisseur of fine prints, particularly etchings. Over two thousand of his collected prints are now housed at the Smithsonian Institution under the title of ‘The Ferris Collection’. | |
Stephen Ferris’s first published etching was created in 1875. During the following years he created many fine portraits and figure studies in this medium. Many were based upon the designs of the artists he admired most, such as, Gerome (his former teacher), Fortuny, Martinetti and Mouilleron such as this original etching entitled, "Romeo and Juliet". | |
Angelo Martinetti: A 19th century Italian artist, Angelo Martinetti is best known as a genre and realist painter and watercolor artist. His paintings and watercolors include such works as, Tea Time, Birthday Morning, Vanity and The Mouse Trap. Martinetti is known to have exhibited in Rome and Turin in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Today, the art of Angelo Martinetti can be found in the collections of the Museum Revoltella, the York Museums Trust, UK, Trieste, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, the New York Historical Society Museum & Library, NY and other important private and public institutions. | |
