Stephen James Ferris & Jean Meissonier

Stephen James Ferris and Jean Meissonier - The Halberdier

The Halberdier

Stephen James Ferris's original etching, The Halberdier, is based based upon a design of the famous French painter, Jean Meissonier. It is printed upon wove paper and with full margins as published in 1887. This impression is also signed by Stephen Ferris in pencil in the lower margin. The practice of hand-signing impressions of etchings and engravings did not take firm hold until the early twentieth century with the exception of early proof impressions published in the late 19th century. The Halberdier is a fine, original example of the etched art created by the American artist, Stephen James Ferris and the designs tcreated by the French artist, Jean Louis Ernest Meissonier.

Note: Stephen James Ferris 'Stephen Ferris': An influential Philadelphia painter and etcher of portraits and figure studies, Stephen James Ferris studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy and in Paris, under Jean Leon Gerome. He achieved a considerable reputation for his art in both America and Europe and received the prestigious Fortuny Prize for the best portrait, Rome, 1876. Ferris also served for twenty six years as the Instructor of Art at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women.
Stephen Ferris’s association with American art and artists is also important. His wife, Elizabeth Moran Ferris, was the sister of the artists, Thomas and Peter Moran. His son, Jean Leon Gerome Moran, became a much admired painter in the late nineteenth century. Stephen Ferris was also a major connoisseur of fine prints, particularly etchings. Over two thousand of his collected prints are now housed at the Smithsonian Institution under the title of ‘The Ferris Collection’.
Stephen Ferris’s first published etching was created in 1875. During the following years he created many fine portraits and figure studies in this medium. Most were based upon the designs of the artists he admired most, such as, Gerome (his former teacher), Fortuny, Mouilleron and Meissonier, such as this original etching entitled, The Halberdier. Some of his finest prints are ‘Orientalist’ in nature and draw upon scenes of the middle and near East.
Jean Meissonier: Jean Louis Ernest Meissonier was one of France's most popular painters of the late nineteenth century. At an early age he moved to Paris and studied art under Leon Cogniet. He first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1836. Fifty years later the Salon held a special, retrospective exhibition of his art.
Famous for his figure studies and military scenes, Jean Meissonier was decorated by the Legion d'honneur (1846) and named a member of the Institut (1861). He was also the first artist to receive the Grand Cross from the Legion of Honour. Today major museums in Amsterdam, St. Petersburg, London, Paris, Munich, Luxembourg and Versailles include his paintings in their permanent collections. The largest collections of Meissonier's art are found in the Wallace Collection, London, and in the Musee d'Orsay, Paris.
Halberdier: The name given to a guard or soldier armed with a halberd. A halberd is a Medieval weapon that has an axlike blade and a steel spike mounted on the end of a long staff. It has been used as a court bodygouard weapon for centuries, and is the ceremonial weapon of the Swiss Guard in the Vatican still used to this day. The practice of hand-signing impressions of etchings and engravings did not take firm hold until the early twentieth century with the exception of early proof impressions published in the late 19th century.
