Note:	George Straton Ferrier: A Scottish painter and etcher, George Straton Ferrier 'Stratton' was best known for his marine and landscape scenes. He began exhibiting his art in 1872 and during the following years his paintings, watercolours and etchings were included in exhibitions at the Royal Academy, London, Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, and at the Royal Scottish Academy. George Ferrier was a full member of the Royal Society of Painters and Etchers (1881), the Royal Scottish Watercolour Society, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and the Royal Watercolour Society.
	"A Ground Swell" (Ships at Sea) was commissioned for "The Portfolio: An Artistic Periodical" published y Seeley, Jackson & Halliday, Fleet Street in 1879. "The Portfolio" was a leading London art journal of the latter nineteenth century founded and edited by Philip Gilbert Hamerton (1834-1894), it was published in annual issues from 1870 to 1892. P. G. Hamerton was the influential author of such classic books as "Etching and Etchers", "The Portfolio", "Chapters on Animals", "Contemporary French Painters", "The Etchings of Rembrandt", and various other important graphic art journals and litterary art books. He regularly commissioned such great etchers as Joseph Pennell, Seymour Haden, D. Y. Cameron, George Straton Ferrier, Samuel Palmer, Ernest George and Robert Walker MacBeth to contribute original art. Ferrier contributed at least four original etchings to "The Portfolio". In this seascape G. S. Ferrier has etched a ground swell with the sea moving in long undulations over shallows caused by more violent agitation at a distance, or from the remnants of energy left in the water after a storm has died away. Hamerton notes that for those who experience motion sickness, also known as sea-sickness will often find that traveling by boat under these conditions can be particularly distressing and unpleasent, however, for those few who are not affected by this motion, it can be an exciting and agreeable journey. "A Ground Swell" is as a fine, original example of the marine art created by the Scottish painter and etcher, George Ferrier.
