Henry Farrer's original etching, "Now Come Still Evening On" is an exceptional example of the etched art created by this 19th century American artist. In this landscape scene, a rural couple have apparently worked most of the day at felling a large tree. Evening finds the mission accomplished and the day's work done. Henry Farrer's landscape etching, "Now Come Still Evening On", was first exhibited at the 1883 exhibition of contemporary American art held by the Art Department of the New England Manufacturers' and Mechanics' Institute in Boston and bears the catalogue number, 261. This particular impression is printed upon hand-made, laid paper and with full margins as printed around 1882 / 1883. It is signed by Henry Farrer within the plate to the lower left and also bearing the printer's name (G. W. H. Ritchie) along the lower margin. |

Note: | Henry Farrer: An important nineteenth century etcher and painter of landscapes and marine subjects, Henry Farrer immigrated to New York in 1863. His first original etchings were created five years later. These were views of old New York buildings commissioned by the publisher, E. B. Patterson. After that date, Henry Farrer concentrated mostly upon landscape and marine scenes which are esteemed for their sunrise or sunset effects. Most of his marine and landscape depictions were created around New York Bay or along the nearby East River. Henry Farrer was a full member of both the American Society of Painters in Water Colors and of the influential New York Etching Club. |
In 1883 the Art Department of the New England Manufacturers' and Mechanics' Institute in Boston held a major exhibition of contemporary American art. Concentrating largely upon American drawings and etchings the exhibition catalogue listed 731 works of original art. Henry Farrer's landscape etching, "Now Come Still Evening On", was first exhibited at this exposition and bears the catalogue number, 261. Most of the etchings exhibited at this institution are very scarce. | |
