Henry Farrer's "Sunset, Gowanus Bay" is typical of his best marine etchings. Most noteworthy is the solid detailing of the ship combined with the strong atmospheric effects of the setting sun upon both sky and water. As a creative etcher Henry Farrer was ahead of most of his American contemporaries, particularly in his use of plate-tone and construction of light and shade. This impression of "Sunset, Gowanus Bay" is an original etching printed upon fine hand made, laid paper and with full margins as published by Dana Estes and Charles E. Lauriat, Boston for "The American Art Review" in 1880. It is signed and dated in the plate by Henry Farrer. |

Note: | Henry Farrer: A fine nineteenth century etcher and painter of landscapes and marine subjects, Henry Farrer immigrated to New York in 1863. His first original etchings were created five years later. These were views of old New York buildings commissioned by the publisher, E. B. Patterson. After that date Henry Farrer concentrated mostly upon marine scenes which became noteworthy for their sunrise or sunset effects. Most of his marine depictions were created around New York Bay or the nearby East River. Henry Farrer was a full member of both the American Society of Painters in Water Colors and of the influential New York Etching Club. |

The American Art Review. A Journal Devoted to the Practical theory, History, and Archaeology of Art: Inspired by the European etched art of James McNeill Whistler, Charles Meryon, Sir Francis Seymour Haden and others, a large number of American artists became seriously interested in the art of etching by 1875. A primary catalyst to the etching revival in America was the journal, American Art Review (1879 to 1881). Founded and edited by Sylvester Rosa Koehler it commissioned American artists for original etchings. Contributing etchers included such famous artists as Thomas Moran, Otto Bacher, Edmund Henry Garrett, Stephen Parrish, Henry Farrer, Eliza Greatorex, Charles Adams Platt and William Merritt Chase.
Due mostly to its lavish production costs the journal lasted only slightly over two years. The finely printed etchings it produced, however, served as a cornerstone for the many great American etchings of the early twentieth century.
Size: | 6 1/2 X 9 1/8 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.) |
Matted with 100% Archival Materials
Condition: | Printed upon fine hand made, laid paper and with full margins as published by Dana Estes and Charles E. Lauriat, Boston for "The American Art Review" in 1880. Signed and dated in the plate (lower left corner) by the artist. There appears to be some very slight matte staining due to a previous framing job about one inch away from the plate in the outer margins. Otherwise this is a splendidly printed, early impression and in excellent condition throughout. This original etching stands as a prime example of the art of Henry Farrer. |
