Henry Farrer's original etching entitled, "December" is typical of his best landscape etchings. Most noteworthy is the solid detailing of the trees and surrounding countryside combined with the strong atmospheric effects upon both sky and land. As a creative etcher, Henry Farrer was ahead of most of his American contemporaries, particularly in his use of plate-tone and construction of light and shade. This impression is printed on hand maid laid paper as published by E. W. Walker & Co. 101 Chauncy Street, Boston for "American Art and American Art Collections" edited by Walter Montgomery in 1889. "December" is a fine, original example of the nineteenth century American art of Henry Farrer. |

Note: | Henry Farrer: A fine nineteenth century etcher and painter of landscapes and marine subjects, Henry Farrer immigrated to New York in 1863. Henry Farrer's first original etchings were created five years later. These were views of old New York buildings commissioned by the publisher, E. B. Patterson. After that date Henry Farrer concentrated mostly upon landscape and marine scenes which are esteemed for their sunrise or sunset effects. Most of his marine depictions were created around New York Bay or the nearby East River. Henry Farrer was a full member of both the American Society of Painters in Water Colors and of the influential New York Etching Club. |

The American Art Review. A Journal Devoted to the Practical theory, History, and Archaeology of Art: Inspired by the European etched art of James McNeill Whistler, Charles Meryon, Sir Francis Seymour Haden and others, a large number of American artists became seriously interested in the art of etching by 1875. A primary catalyst to the etching revival in America was the journal, American Art Review (1879-1881). Founded and edited by Sylvester Rosa Koehler it commissioned American artists for original etchings. Contributing etchers included such famous artists as Thomas and Peter Moran, Otto Bacher, J. M. Falconer, Robert Swain Gifford, Henry Farrer, Samuel Colman, Robert Swain Gifford and James D. Smillie. In total, Henry Farrer contributed three original etchings to the American Art Review.
Due mostly to its lavish production costs the American Art Review lasted only slightly over two years. The finely printed etchings it produced, however, served as a cornerstone for the many great American etchings of the early twentieth century. Eight years later, E. W. Walker & Co. 101 Chauncy Street, Boston published the "American Art and American Art Collections" edited by Walter Montgomery issuing a second edition of some of the plates from the Review. Such is the case with this original impression entitled, December.
