Giovanni Battista Falda

Giovanni Battista Falda - Chiesa di Santa Anastasia Church of Saint Anastasia

Chiesa di Santa Anastasia (Church of Saint Anastasia)

Giovanni Battista Falda's original etching, Chiesa di Santa Anastasia alle Radici del' Palatino Verso il Velabro (Church of Saint Anastasia with the Ruins of the Imperial Palace on the Palatine) provides a striking view of this basilica church with the ruins of the Roman palace on Mount Palatine illustrated in the background. The first church dates back to the late third or early fourth century and is named after the martyr, Anastasia of Sirmium. The church has undergone many restorations through the centuries, the last taking place in 1636 under the papacy of Sixtus IV. The Church of Saint Anastasia has long been linked to the cult of St. Jerome. Domenichino's painting of this saint hangs over its alter.

This original Giovanni Battista Falda etching is printed upon seventeenth century hand-made, laid paper and with full margins as published in Rome by Giacomo de Rossi in 1669. It is a fine, original example of the etched art created by the 17th century Italian artist, Giovanni Battista Falda and of architectural etching of the Baroque age.

Title: Chiesa di Santa Anastasia alle Radici del' Palatino Verso il Velabro (Church of Saint Anastasia with the Ruins of the Imperial Palace on the Palatine)
Artist: Falda, Giovanni Battista (Valduggia, 1643 - Rome, 1678)
Date: 1669
Medium: Original Etching
Publisher: Giacomo de Rossi, Rome
Note: Giovanni Battista Falda: Showing artistic gifts at an early age, Giovanni Battista Falda studied art in his native town under the painter, Francisco Ferrari. At the age of fourteen he traveled to Rome where he was soon employed by the publisher, Giacomo de Rossi. Concentrating almost solely upon architectural views, Giovanni Battista Falda's recorded opus runs to 298 original etchings. Most of these works of art are found in his three greatest sets of etchings, the Nuovo Teatro (1665-1669), The Gardens of Rome (1670), and The Fountains of Rome (1675).
Giovanni Battista Falda's artistic style was quite unlike any other mid seventeenth century Italian etcher or engraver. His strong contrasts of light and shade, his architectural accuracy and the care he took delineating incidental figures and objects have led scholars to compare his etchings most frequently to those of his great French contemporaries, Jacques Callot and Israel Silvestre. Falda's influence upon Italian architectural art was far reaching. In the following generations such great etchers as Venturini, Alessandro Specchi and Guiseppi Vasi were directly inspired by Giovanni Battista Falda's art. It was Falda, in fact, who created the foundation for the great school of Italian eighteenth century architectural etching, most notably led by Piranesi.
The Nuovo Teatro: One of the most important architectural projects of the seventeenth century was the urban renovation of Rome. Under the brilliant leadership of Pope Alessandro VII (1655-1667), Rome dramatically emerged as one of the most modern and beautiful cities of the new Baroque age. Within several decades spacious roadways were constructed, monumental buildings arose, and many public squares appeared with elaborate fountains and monuments. To be sure, this massive undertaking was meant to underline the absolute power of the Papacy but it also brought forth a new flowering of Italian art and architecture.
The Nuovo Teatro was initiated in 1665 to depict the new Rome in a series of etchings. What it gave to future generations was a magnificent historical record of views etched by two of Italy's greatest architectural artists. The printing and publishing of these important etchings was entrusted to Giacomo de Rossi (1626-1691), the head of the most dominant Roman publishing house. ( Sons and nephews of de Rossi, in fact, continued the publishing house until 1738 when the business was sold to Pope Clement XII to form the basis of the Regia Calcografia.) Altogether, four sets of Nuovo Teatro were created during the seventeenth century. Volumes one (35 etchings) and two (17 etchings) were both published in the year of 1665 and dealt mainly in views of the new piazzas, gardens, terraces and their surrounding buildings. Volume 3 (38 etchings) was published in 1669 and concentrated upon the newly constructed churches of Rome. Every plate from the first three sets was both designed and etched by the influential architectural artist, Giovanni Battista Falda (1643-1678). Chiesa di Santa Anastasia alle Radici del' Palatino Verso il Velabro hails from this 1669 set. For reasons unknown the fourth and final volume (52 etchings) did not appear until 1699. It was published by Giacomo's successor, Domenico de Rossi, and featured views of the palaces and stately homes of Rome. Each plate was designed and etched by the famous architect and etcher, Alessandro Specchi (1668-1729).
