George Sigmund Facius's original soft ground etching and stipple engraving, "Head of a Man 'In His Majesty's Collection' (Portrait of a Young Man Facing Left)" is based upon a drawing created by the 16th century Italian painter, Annibale Carracci. This impression is printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper and with full margins as created by George Sigmund Facius in 1807 for John Chamberlaine's important set of engravings based upon drawings in the Royal Collection entitled, "Engravings from the Original Designs of Annibale, Agostino and Ludovico Carracci, in his Majesty's Collection". Bearing the text, "From the Original drawing by 'Annibale Carracci.", "Engrav'd by G. S. Facius", "In His Majesty's Collection", and the publication line, "Published as the Act directs May 7.1807. by J. Chamberlaine. Scotland Yard." in the lower margin, and the plate number "PL. XI." in the upper right corner. The image depicts the portrait of a young man facing left. It is a large and impressive example of late eighteenth / early nineteenth printmaking techniques. The artist, George Sigmund Facius, (also spelt Georg), has employed both soft ground etching and stippling to create a portrait of graceful line and tone. "Head of a Man (Portrait of a Young Man Facing Left)" is a fine, original example of the British art of Georg Sigmund Facius, and the designs of Annibale Carracci. |

Designer: | Carracci, Annibale (Bologna, 1560 - Rome, 1609) |

Medium: | Original Soft Ground Etching & Stipple Engraving |
Publisher: | John Chamberlaine, London |
Note: | George Sigmund Facius & Johann Gottlieb Facius: Born in Germany, the Facius brothers studied engraving techniques in Brussels. Excelling in the stipple medium they produced many portraits, decorative, religious and mythological subjects. In 1776 they moved to London, at the request of John Boydell, and produced many engravings for this publisher. |
During their careers, Georg Sigmund Facius (Ratisbon, c. 1750 - London, 1814) and Johann Gottlieb Facius (Ratisbon, c. 1750 - London, 1802) created notable plates after the designs of Francis Wheatley, Benjamin West, Joshua Reynolds and many others. Interestingly, they produced very few works individually and preferred to work in collaboration. This original soft ground etching based after Annibale Carracci's "Head of a Man" was created five years after the death of Johann Gottlieb Facius. It is therefore only one of a handful of etchings created solely from the hand of Georg Sigmund Facius. This iimpression hails from the 1812 edition entitled, "Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman Florentine and Venetian Schools".
Annibale Carracci: The Bolognese brothers, Annibale Carracci (Bologne, 1560 - Rome, 1609) and Agostino Carracci (Bologna, 1557 - Parme, 1602) and their cousin Ludovico Carracci (Bologna, 1555 - 1619), were prominent figures that stood in opposition to the prevailing Mannerism of late 16th century Italian painting. After studying art under his uncle in Parma, Annibale Carracci first worked in Venice and Bologna.
In the early 1580’s, the Carracci brothers founded the Accademia degli Incamminati (Academy of the Progressives) in Bologna. They laid special emphasis upon drawing from life and clear draughtsmanship which became associated with the artists of the Bolognese School.
Around 1600 Annibale Carracci was invited to Rome by Cardinal Odoardo Farnese to decorate the Farnese Palace. During the next four years some of his most famous frescoes were created there. Regarded as a master of both figure and landscape painting, Annibale Carracci directly influenced such artists as Domenichino, Claude Lorrain and Poussin.
Head of a Man 'In His Majesty's Collection': An original soft ground etching and stipple engraving by George Sigmund Facius, "Head of a Man 'In His Majesty's Collection'" is a large and impressive example of late 18th & early 19th printmaking techniques. The artist, George Sigmund Facius, (also spelt Georg), has employed both soft ground etching and stippling to create a portrait of graceful line and tone. This engraving is based upon a drawing created by the 16th century Bolognese painter, Annibale Carracci, and created by George Sigmund Facius in 1807 for John Chamberlaine's important set of engravings based upon drawings in the Royal Collection entitled, "Engravings from the Original Designs of Annibale, Agostino and Ludovico Carracci, in his Majesty's Collection". The image depicts the portrait of a young man in profile, facing left. "Head of a Man" is a striking, original example of the British art of Georg Sigmund Facius, and the designs of Annibale Carracci.
John Chamberlaine (British, c. 1745 - 1812): In February, 1791, John Chamberlaine (London, 1745 - 1812) was appointed Keeper of Drawings and Medals to the King. As curator to his Majesty's Collection, Chamberlaine's greatest achievement was to publish engravings and etchings based upon these famous old master acquisitions. Between March, 1792 and February, 1800, John Chamberlaine published eighty-four stipple engravings based upon Holbein's portrait drawings. All but four of these engravings were created by Francesco Bartolozzi, who held the title of, 'Historical Engraver to his Majesty'.
In 1796, John Chamberlaine initiated another important set of engravings based upon drawings in the Royal Collection, entitled, "Imitations of Original Designs by Leonardo da Vinci". The engravers for this series were Francesco Bartolozzi and his followers. The following year, John Chamberlaine began his final set under the title of, "Engravings from the Original Designs of Annibale, Agostino and Ludovico Carracci, in his Majesty's Collection". In the following years this last set was expanded to include engravings based upon the designs of other old masters, such as, Raphael 'Raffaello Santi', Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonaroti, Claude Lorrain, Nicolas Poussin, Leonardo da Vinci, Giovanni Antonio Canal 'Canaletto' and other major artist. For this opus, John Chamberlaine commissioned such leading engravers as Francesco Bartolozzi (1727 - 1815), Luigi Schiavonetti (1765 - 1810), Frederick Christian Lewis (1779 - 1856), Peltro William Tomkins (1760 - 1840) and others to worked upon this project.
The engravings for the 1796 "Imitations of Original Designs by Leonardo da Vinci" and the 1797 "Engravings from the Original Designs of Annibale, Agostino and Ludovico Carracci, in his Majesty's Collection", were both completed in 1812. At this point John Chamberlaine combined the two sets under the general title of "Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman Florentine and Venetian Schools". Taking eighteen years to complete, the entire series consisted of sixty-six plates, with the exception of a few sets which contained additional plates (not listed in the index), and bearing the publication date of 1795 or 1796. In order to simulate varying drawing methods, the artists used a wide ranging array of printmaking techniques such as stippling, soft ground etching and aquatinting, often employing either separately printed color plates or hand-coloring. As a result, some of the most complex and technically accomplished etchings and engravings of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries are found within this scarce and monumental collection. Head of a Man 'In His Majesty's Collection' (Portrait of a Young Man Facing Left) hails from John Chamberlaine's edition entitled, Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman Florentine and Venetian Schools.
