Note: Philip Evergood: A major figure in twentieth century American art, Philip Howard Francis Dixon Evergood was an accomplished painter, etcher, lithographer, sculptor, illustrator and writer. From 1918 to 1920, Evergood studied at Cambridge University in England. He then concentrated upon the fine arts at the Slade School, London (1920 to 1923), the Art Students League of New York (1923 to 1925) and at the Academie Julien in Paris. Evergood's first one man exhibition was held in New York in 1927.
From the beginning, Evergood established himself as a leading artist of social criticism. As an illustrator for both Time and Fortune magazines his social art was appreciated by millions during the 1930's. This led to many commissions and awards for Evergood, including prizes from the Art Institute of Chicago, the Carnegie Institute, the Corcoran Gallery and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. One scholar writes, " Jack Levine, Philip Evergood and Ben Shahn were the leading painters of the thirties whose work combined biting social comment with a distinctive personal vision. They were - and are - 'protest artists', but they are not social realists. Each evolved a unique artistic statement." * (Ralph E. Sikes, The Indignant Eye: The Artist as Social Critic, Boston, Beacon Press, 1976, pp. 355 & 356).
Although he had experimented with etching and lithography as early as the 1920's, Evergood did not begin to devote himself to original printmaking until after 1945. At this time he studied printmaking techniques at the famous New York studio of Stanley William Hayter. During the following twenty-five years he produced many major works of art in both lithography and etching.
Philip Evergood was a full member of the Art Students League of New York and the National Institute of Arts and Letters. His original prints and paintings are included in the permanent collections of the Tate Gallery, London, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Los Angeles County Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
