George Emerick Essig's original etching, "On the Watch", was etched by the New Jersey artist between 1880 and 1890. It is based upon a painting created by the French artist, Emile Renouf. This impression is printed upon nineteenth century wove paper and with large, full margins and contains the full title within the lower margin. "On the Watch" depicts a hunter hiding in a field patiently waiting for his prey. It is a fine, original example of the late nineteenth century etched art created by the American artist, George Essig. |

Note: | George Emerick Essig: A New Jersey painter, etcher and illustrator, George Emerick Essig received his education at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, studying under Edward Moran and James Hamilton. Around 1870, George Essig moved permanently to the region of Atlantic City, New Jersey, and dedicated his art to marine compositions, genre scenes and landscapes. George Essig's primary medium was watercolor but during the 1880's and early 1890's he created a number of original etchings, both based upon his paintings and those of his contemporaries. "On the Watch" is based upon the painting created by the French artist, Emile Renouf. |
Today the art of George Emerick Essig will be found in many public and private collections, including the New Jersey State Museum, Trenton, and the State Museum of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg. | |

Containing several slight browning marks as well as some water staining in the outer margins (well removed from the actual etching) else a strong, finely printed impression and in good condition throughout. "On the Watch" represents a fine, original example of the etched art of George Emerick Essig. |
