English Chromolithography

English Chromolithography - The Temple of Hera

The Temple of Hera

English Chromolithography: "The Temple of Hera" is an original chromolithographic 'Trial Proof impression', printed around 1880. It represents a brilliant example of 19th century English Chromolithography.

The scene depicts the famous temples of Hera at Paestum, Italy. Located about ninety kilometers south of Naples, Paestum was a major colony of ancient Greece. The Temple to the left was built around 550 B.C and contains nine columns at each end and 18 columns at the sides. The Temple of Hera in the foreground (also called the Temple of Poseidon) was built around 460 B.C. and contains six columns at each end and 14 columns at the sides. Rediscovered in the mid eighteenth century, these temples are among the greatest known examples of ancient Greek architecture.

Title: English Chromolithography: The Temple of Hera
Publisher: Published in England
Date: c. 1880
Medium: Original Chromolithograph
Note: Chromolithography: Printing images in colour by using a series of carefully registered tint stones -- became the most popular method for the original print-making of everything from posters to fine art during the last half of the twentieth century. Invented in Germany during the 1830's chromolithographic techniques quickly spread and by 1870 major lithographic firms had been established in the United States, Britain and the Continent. The work of such publishing and printing houses of this era, such as, Currier and Ives in New York, Louis Prang in Boston, the Arundel Society and M. & N. Hanhart in London and Alfred-Leon Lemercier in Paris, are now well known to most collectors of nineteenth century chromolithographic art.
Most of the best nineteenth century topographical views in this medium originated from British publishers. American chromolithographers tended to specialize in either views of their own cities or in sentimental depictions. British publishers, on the other hand, catered to a population curious about life in foreign lands. As well, many sent their lithographic stones to printing houses in Germany as the Germans throughout the nineteenth century maintained the reputation of being the finest printers. This particular impression bears a 'Printed in Germany' stamp on the verso.
The reason why The Temple of Hera contains no title nor publisher's address is that it is a Trial Proof impression. Trial Proofs were made before the actual edition was struck and therefore represent one of the first impressions taken from the stone. Thus in the outer margins (under the matte) both registration marks and a chromolithographic colour bar exist. To have such an early impression of such a large and beautiful chromolithograph is not common.
