Note:	John Hudson Elwell: Raised near Boston, John Hudson Elwell was apprenticed to Reuben Carpenter at the age of fourteen. Carpenter held a national reputation for both his engraved bookplates and banknote engravings. Elwell then completed his education at the Evening Art School, Boston, under Vesper George and Reuben Carpenter.
	A member of the Boston Art Club, John Elwell exhibited both his paintings and etchings. His work for ex libris art, however, gained for him his strongest reputation. He was one of the few remaining bookplate artists of his day to meticulously engrave his plates in the traditional style, rejecting modern and more convenient methods. Thus sometimes Elwell would devote more than a year’s work to a single plate, creating astounding detail within a relatively small surface. Engravings such as "Ex Libris Elizabeth Watson Diamond" are only truly appreciated under the lens of a magnifying glass. In this original engraving, John Elwell has created a serene & scenic Chinese winter landscape. In the forefront of this river view, he depicts a man sculling his fish filled sampan (small boat), along the a steep rocky riverbank. To the right, in the distant background, Elwell's engraving reveals a majestic temple crowning the peak of the precipice freshly covered in snow. He has also added a plaque with the collector's name, "Elizabeth Watson Diamond" on the rocks to the right. The Chinese 'sampan' is a small flat bottomed boat, often containing a shelter in the rear. The sampan requires oars or poles to move along the coastal areas or riverbanks. These boats were traditionally used for fishing and the transportation of goods, however, they were also used as living quarters by some. This is clearly a striking, original example of the ex libris art created by the American artist, John Hudson Elwell.
	A Note on Ex Libris Art: Ex-Libris woodcuts, wood engravings and etchings have their beginnings as far back as the mid fifteenth century. Their function was initially quite utilitarian as plates used to signify the ownership of books. As private libraries and their owners gained more wealth and prestige, however, so did their ex-libris bookplates. Pictorial imagery became as important as the wording and the finished work of art often came to stand as an owner’s claim to fame. Before long famous artists were commissioned by wealthy collectors to create their ex libris designs and during the centuries such great talents as Durer, Holbein, Manet, Toulouse-Lautrec and Rockwell Kent all contributed significantly to this great genre.
	The golden era for ex-libris art was during the twentieth century, most particularly in the Art Deco decade of the 1930’s. Collecting of ex-libris etchings, engravings and wood engravings reached such a height at this time that many artists devoted themselves almost exclusively to this area.
