Charles Eisen 'Charles Domenique Joseph Eisen': A leading seventeenth century
French painter, designed and etcher, Charles Domenique Joseph Eisen was first instructed
by his father, Franz Eisen (1695-1777). In 1741 he travelled to Paris to
complete his studies in painting and engraving under J. P. Le Bas (1707-1783).
Charles Eisen's talents and graceful style soon gained him admittance to the
French court and, by 1750, he was appointed as both the Court Painter to
the King and the drawing master of Madame de Pompadour. |
|
Charles Eisen was a master of figure studies, nudes, portraits and
all forms of decorative designs. This was the Golden Age of French Rococo
illustration and engraving. Epitomized by the cult of pleasure and the pursuit
of gallantry, Eisen's skills proved a perfect match with this form
of art. Thus some of the greatest illustrated books from this period, such
as Les Sens (1766), Les Baisers (1770) and Fontaine's
Contes et nouvelles en vers (1762) bear both designs and etchings from
Eisen's hand. |
|
Many of Charles Eisen's original etchings were commissioned
as frontis-pieces for books of importance. Second Livre de Fragmens
is one of the artist's most impressive designs in this oeuvre. Critics
have sometimes compared Eisen's art to Watteau or Boucher, but original
etchings such as this example, put one more in mind of the great Italian
painter and etcher of this period, Tiepolo. As Tiepolo and Eisen were contemporaries
(and probably very much aware of each other's art) it is impossible
to determine who influenced whom. In any case, "Second Livre De Fragments
a L'Usage De Diffrens Artistes" is a striking work of French Rococo art.
The English translation of this beautiful etching is (Second Book of Fragments
used by Different Artists). |
