Note: | The Phytanthoza Iconographia: One of the most desirable sources of early eighteenth century botanical art is the "Phytanthoza Iconographia", also known as the Illustrated Record of Flowering Plants. It was the inspiration of the Regensburg botanist, Johann Wilhelm Weinmann. Weinmann initially commissioned the great German botanical artist, G. D. Ehret (Born, 1708 - Died, 1770) to create the drawings for all represented plants. George Ehret would later prove himself to be among the finest botanical artists of the entire century, producing such spectacular designs as those found in "Selenicerus Grandiflorus" (1750 to 1773). "The Phytanthoza" (1737) thus contains some of Ehret's early art, but with an intriguing complication. When Ehret had created about five hundred drawings for the "Phytanthoza" a financial dispute arose between the artist and Weinmann. The result was that Ehret was dismissed and replaced by other artists. To this day nobody knows which of these engravings were designed by Ehret and which were drawn by other hands. |
Upon its completion the "Phytanthoza Iconographia" was published in Nuremberg in 1737. The entire set consisted of slightly over one thousand works of art, engraved by either Haid, Seuterum or Johannes Ridinger. Each engraving was hand-coloured by commissioned artists before publication. With their magnificent delineations of flowers and foliage these large, original engravings are among the greatest examples of early eighteenth century botanical art. | |
