Kerr Eby: Published by the Brooklyn Society of Etchers, Harold Kerr Eby's Cornwall was the Associate Members' print for the year 1927. It depicts a small Cornish village nestled on an inlet. A two-masted ship is docked in the foreground and rolling hills are seen in the background. To the lower left within the plate Kerr Eby has written what appears to be, "Eby, Cornwall, 1927". The artist created several etchings of Cornish scenes during this time. Impressions of Harold Kerr Eby's Cornwall are included in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Yale University Art Gallery. |

Note: | Kerr Eby 'Harold Kerr Eby': Born to Canadian missionary parents stationed in Japan, Harold Kerr Eby moved to New York in 1907 and studied art techniques at the Pratt Institute and at the Art Students League. He then began working as a magazine illustrator and at the American Lithographic Company. He also developed working relationships with Childe Hassam and John Henry Twachtman and became a member of their artist colony in Cos Cob, Connecticut. |
When America entered the First World War in 1917 Kerr Eby enlisted in the army. He served with the 40th Engineers in France and saw action as both an ambulance worker and as a camoufleur. The war and its horrors had a profound effect upon Kerr Eby's art. He created many drawings at or near the front, and when he returned to New York at the war's end he utilized these for a number remarkable etchings and lithographs. Eby's other fine prints concentrated upon landscapes and architectural views in both the United States and England. He was a full member of the Brooklyn Society of Etchers by 1925.
By the mid 1930's it was evident to many that another World War loomed on the horizon. Although not a pacifist, the artist felt obliged to visually convey the sufferings and costs of military conflict. In 1936 his illustrated book, War, was published by Yale University Press.
Kerr Eby applied to enlist in the services when America declared war again in 1941, but was rejected due to his age. He was, however, accepted in a combat artist program and, in 1943 and 1944, traveled with the Marines to the South Pacific. He witnessed and recorded the violent battles of Tarawa and Guadalcanal and was trapped for three weeks in a foxhole on Bougainville. There Eby obtained a tropical disease from which he never recovered.
Today major collections of the art of Kerr Eby may be seen at the New York Public Library, the United States Navy Art Collection, the Library of Congress and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
