Czar James Dyer 'C. J. Dyer': An interesting nineteenth
century artist and cartographer, Czar James Dyer enlisted in the United
States Navy at the age of eighteen and served aboard the U.S.S. Mattabassett
in the Civil War. At war's end he apparently moved back to his native
city of Jackson, Michigan and provided lithographs for both American
and Canadian publications. In this original lithograph of the Knitting
Mills of Paris Ontario, for example, he has signed his name, "C.
J. Dyer, Jackson, Mich." The two illustrations of the residences
of Cornelius Clump and Christopher Barker along the lower margin also
bear his signature. During this period Dyer worked for California and
New York State atlases, as well as Canadian atlases. |
|
By 1880 C. J. Dyer was residing in Oakland, California.
Within several years he had moved to the Arizona Territory and was appointed
the official mapmaker for the rapidly expanding city of Phoenix. Entering
politics, Czar James Dyer served as a city councilman during the mid 1880's
and was the interim mayor in 1889. |
|
The Canadian County Atlas: Less than a
decade after Confederation, the publication of large, fully detailed
County Atlases can be looked upon as a matter of newly born Canadian
pride. Single and double sized maps accurately examined Ontario settlements,
cities, towns, villages and the surrounding countryside. Individual lithographs
of prominent buildings, mills, factories, businesses and even private
homes were featured. Each Ontario County was represented in specific
volumes and no Canadian venture in cartography has to this day been as
important and as wide sweeping as this massive 1873 publication. |
|
Of greatest interest are the actual views of towns and
settlements, such as this original lithograph depicting the Ontario Kitting Mills in Paris, Ontario.
These images provide a vital historical record of Canada's early history. |
