Jimmie Durham: A leading contemporary painter
and sculptor, Jimmie Durham is also known for his poetry, theater performances,
civil rights work and as a treaty activist for the American Indian Movement.
Born an Arkansas Cherokee, Jimmie Durham's first solo exhibition was held
in Austin, Texas in 1965. Since that time his art has been the subject
of exhibitions as such institutions as the Whitney Museum of American Art,
Wittgenstein Haus, Vienna, Hamburg Kunstverein, Palais des Beaux Arts,
Brussels, Museum of Contemporary Art, Antwerp, Institute of Contemporary
Art, London, the European Biennial of Contemporary Art, Trentino, Italy
and the Venice Biennale. Recently a retrospective of Jimmie Durham’s
art was held at the Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, France. |
|
Jimmie Durham has left his mark as both an artist and an
activist. During the 1960's, his art and literature was strongly
intertwined with the United States Civil Rights movement. He then moved
to Geneva, Switzerland (1968) and studied there at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts.
In 1973, Jimmie Durham returned to the United States and worked as a political
organizer for the American Indian Movement (AIM). During this decade, he
also served as a director of the International Indian Treaty Council and
as a representative to the United Nations. |
|
In 1981, Jimmie Durham became Director of the Foundation for
the Community of Artists in New York City. "Columbus Day", a book of his
poetry, was published in 1983. In 1987, Jimmie Durham moved to Cuernavaca,
Mexico, and began to dedicate his creativity to his now famous sculpture
and installations, often juxtaposed with text and or images. Obviously, 'text' plays
a major role in "Look In Look Out". Within the actual lithograph Durham has
written this unlikely request; "Please just ignore the English text". |
|
In 1994, Jimmie Durham moved back to Europe and has resided
mostly in Berlin. Since that time his often controversial but always compelling
art has continued to be a major, international force. As well, in 2005,
Jimmie Durham co-curated, "The American West, an Attack on Cowboy and Indian
Mythology", at Compton Verney, England. |
