Franco Durelli: A leading contemporary Italian
painter, printmaker and architect, Franco Durelli moved to Rome at an early
age. In 1966 (at the age of sixteen) Franco Durelli was awarded a study
grant from the Art Academy of Rome. The artist received a degree from the
Via Ripetta Art School and graduated in Architecture at Rome University
in 1976. |
|
Franco Durelli's first published print dates from 1973.
Since that time the artist has created over seventy-five lithographs, etchings,
soft-ground etchings and linocuts. Durelli's first one man exhibition
took place in Rome at the Galleria Centroundici in 1972. During the following
years his art has been included in major exhibitions in Arles, Salerno,
Turin, Genoa, Barcelona and elsewhere. Currently, the art of Franco Durelli
may be seen at the exhibition, "Arte e Natura", Artena Town Hall, Rome (December.
2008), and the Museo della via Ostiense (March, 2009). |
|
Whether his subject is landscape, figure studies, religious
art, or depictions of animals, Franco Durelli’s starting point is
that art can create a form of language, and a portal to the inner workings
of the unconscious. He thus directed the painting workshop, 'Franco
Basaglia '84', with the Cultural Association in Rome, for a
period of ten years. The workshop focused upon employing art to reintegrate
into society persons suffering from mental disorders. |

"Figura Seduta" (Seated Figure) dates from 1975 and was published in a small
edition of thirty, signed impressions. The zinc plate was then canceled.
In the lower left margin Durelli has written, "prove d'entre" --
which signifies the approved, final proof impression before the published
edition. "Figura Seduta" (Seated Figure) is a large, compelling example of Franco Durelli's
graphic art. |
