Asher Brown Durand's portrait engraving of the American artist, John Trumbull (1756-1843), is one of nineteen engravings that he executed for Herring and Longacre's "National Portrait Gallery of Distinguished Americans". Taken from the original oil portrait by Samuel Waldo (1783-1861) and William Jewett (1795-1873), now in the Yale University Art Gallery, Asher B. Durand succeeded in doing justice to the representation of his old friend and first important patron. Huntington called this engraving "truly a gem of art" and stated: "While it was in progress, John Trumbull gave A. B. Durand sittings for the perfection of the plate, and with those masterly yet delicate strokes of the graver he added an expression of individual life which greatly enhances its interest. Remembering Trumbull well, and often meeting him in my early years, I see in this print the very expression of the living man, the clever artist, the mettlesome soldier, and the polished gentleman of the old school." * This impression of the "Portrait of John Trumbull" is an original engraving by Asher Brown Durand published in 1833. |

Asher Brown Durand 'Asher B. Durand': Arguably the most influential nineteenth American artist, Asher Brown Durand is often called, 'the father of American Landscape Painting'. Durand, however, began his career not as a painter but as an engraver. In this capacity he was apprenticed to Peter Maverick at the age of sixteen. Five years later he was co-partner of an engraving establishment with his former master, under the name of Maverick and Durand. By this time he had already established himself as America's most capable engraver and his large 1823 engraving, "The Declaration of Independence" (after John Trumbull), gave him unparalleled success.
In 1836 A. B. Durand abandoned engraving in favor of painting. His portraits in this medium captured many of the most famous men of the day and his even more important landscape paintings made him a vital force within the now famous Hudson River School. Asher Brown Durand was a founding member of the National Academy of Design (1826) and served as its President from 1845 to 1861.
All Asher B. Durand's engraved art shows the mark of his talents, even his more commerical attempts such as bank note engraving. "Portrait of John Trumbull" belongs to an ambitious undertaking published in parts from 1833 to 1839. Entitled, "The National Portrait Gallery of Distinguished Americans", each engraved portrait was accompanied by a biography of the sitter. In total, A. B. Durand contributed nineteen plates to the publication. Barbara Gallati writes, "Daniel Huntington noted: 'None of Durand's portrait engravings excel some of those small ones he executed for Herring and Longacre's National Portrait Gallery, and of these the heads of Governor Ogden, Chief-Justice Marshall, Charles Carroll and Colonel John Trumbull hold preeminent rank." **
Note: | John Trumbull 'Colonel' (Lebannon, Connecticut, 1756 - New York, 1843): A painter and military figure, John Trumbull graduated from Harvard in 1773. In the American Revolutionary war his draughtsmanship came to the attention of George Washington, who appointed him an aide-de-camp and his military secretary. In 1780 he sailed to France and then to London, and presented a letter of recommendation from Benjamin Franklin to Benjamin West in order to pursue his art studies. Because of continuing, warring relations between England and Britain, he was arrested for treason and served a prison term of eight months. Trumbull then returned to the United States but was back in London in 1784 to conclude his studies under West. |
During his career, John Trumbull became most famous for his military portraits and scenes of the Revolutionary War. Such well known paintings as "The Declaration of Independence", "The Battle of Bunker Hill" and "General Washington Resigning his Commission" may be seen at the Capitol. John Trumbull served as the long standing President of the American Academy of Fine Arts. He was also an important, early patron of Asher Brown Durand and commissioned the artist to engrave some of his best paintings.
