Note: | Jules Dupre: The first great movement of French landscape art originated in the forests of Barbizon. Its leading artists were Corot, Millet, Rousseau, Daubigny and Jules Dupre. Their landscape paintings and prints directly influenced the following generation of Impressionist artists. |
Almost entirely self-taught, Jules Dupre came to Paris at the age of twenty. His first exhibited paintings were shown at the Paris Salon in 1831 and he continued to exhibit there and at other major expositions throughout the course of his career. His landscape and seascape compositions were very influential and among his chief admirers was Eugene Delacroix. Jules Dupre was also responsible for introducing the English landscape art of John Constable into French circles. As well, he befriended and promoted Theodore Rousseau and his art. These two great landscape painters, in fact, shared a studio for many years.
Regrettably, Jules Dupre's graphic oeuvre is not large. He created only ten original lithographs, most for the Paris publisher, L'Artiste, in the mid 1830's. All are landscape views. Bords de la Somme 'Picardie' (Banks of the Somme 'Picardy') is surely one of Jules Dupre's early masterpieces. Its tone, texture and atmospheric effects all indicate the hand of a great nineteenth century landscape artist.
Bords de la Somme 'Picardie' (Banks of the Somme 'Picardy'): This original lithograph was commissioned in 1836 for L'Artiste, Revue de Paris, France's foremost nineteenth century publisher of artistic lithographs, etchings, & engravings since its inception in 1831. This impression bears the publisher's name "L'Artiste" name in the upper margin, the title, “Bords de la Somme (Picardie), the artist's name, "Jules Dupre.", & the printer's details, "Lith. de Bernard et Frey" along the lower margin as published by L’Artiste, Journal de la Litterature et des Beaux-Arts, 1re Serie, Tome XII, A Paris Rue de Seine-Saint-Germaine,39, 1836. The Biblioteque Nationale de France contains an impression of this original lithograph in its permanent collection, Ref # 1836 (SER1, T12).
L'Artiste, Paris (1831 - 1904): The Paris art journal, L'Artiste was one of the most-long lasting literary reviews encompassing the visual arts, literature, and music. It is considered by many a most important historical record of French art of the nineteenth century. Founded and directed by Achille Ricourt, this art journal published its first issue in February of 1831, under the title of, "L'Artiste. Journal de la Litterature et des Beaux-Arts" at the address, Rue de Seine-Saint-Germain, 39. Its first vignette, created by Tony Johannot depicted a painter, a sculptor, a writer and a musician accompanied by two women singing. During its long publishing history, the journal was edited by Achille Ricourt (founder/director), Arsene Houssaye (first editor in chief), a post that was also held by, Edouard Houssaye, Auguste de Vaucelle, Theophile Gautier, and others. Each volume consisted of reproductive and most importantly, original prints in the medium of lithography, etching, engraving, and other graphic mediums created by contemporary French artists such as, Paul Delaroche, Tony Johannot, Celestin-Francois Nanteuil, Francois Jules Collignon, Jules Dupre, Hector Martin, Charles Joshua Chaplin, Paul Gavarni, Auguste Delatre, Armand Hubert Simon Leleux, Charles Francois Daubigny, E. Delacroix, Theodore Valerio and many other important artists of the times. "Bords de la Somme 'Picardie'" by Jules Dupre is a striking example of the lithographic art commissioned by L'Artiste in 1836. L'Artiste published art reviews and literary works by art critics and writers such as, Pierre Jules Theophile Gautier, Charles Baudelaire, Honore de Balzac, A. Houssaye, A. Dumas, and others. L'Artiste later absorbed the "Revue de Paris", another important French literary magazine founded by Louis Desire Vernon in 1829. By the time of its demise in 1904, L'Artiste had published a total of seventy two issues.
