John Dowell - Make It Short

Make It Short

John Dowell's original lithograph, "Make It Short" is an 'Artist Proof Impression' printed upon fine, hand-made paper with the 'Arches-France' watermark and with full deckled margins as published in Venice in 1973. This original work of art is signed, dated, titled and numbered by John Dowell in pencil along the lower margin.

A major element in John Dowell's art has been to find an abstract, visual interpretation for poetry and music. In this latter vein he has been drawn in particular to an examination of jazz. "Make It Short", with its many forms and shapes emerging from lines and colours, can clearly be appreciated much like a passage of music. It is a unique, original example of the contemporary art created by the leading African-American artist John E. Dowell, Jr.

A major element in John Dowell's art has been to find an abstract, visual interpretation for poetry and music. In this latter vein he has been drawn in particular to an examination of jazz. Make it Short, with its many forms and shapes emerging from lines and colours, can clearly be appreciated much like a passage of music. John Dowell states, "Make It Short is a print mono type--- for it is watercolored. The entire edition was never completed--watercolored." Thus he regarded each work as a unique piece of art and numbered them with 'A.P' -- 'Artist's Proof'.
