Note: | Israel Doskow: A painter, etcher and illustrator, Israel Doskow moved from Russia to the United States at an early age. He first studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art before completing his education at the Art Students League of New York. During his career, Israel Doskow exhibited regularly in New York, Washington, Boston and Philadelphia. He was a full member of the prestigious Salmagundi Club, New York, and of the Society of Independent Artists. |
An accomplished figure and landscape artist, Israel Doskow's work was equally well received in the mediums of painting, drawing, etching, such as this original etching depicting a bullfight, and illustration In the latter field he illustrated many fine books including, Henry Williamson's, The Phasian Bird. | |
A number of Israel Doskow's etchings drew inspiration from his religious convictions. He was an early resident of Teaneck, New Jersey, having moved there from Manhattan around 1916. After the George Washington Bridge opened in 1931, many Jewish families came to the area. Israel Doskow was a leader in providing safety and religious freedoms for these families and fought against the local chapters of the Ku Klux Klan and the German Bund organization. The first services for Jews in Teaneck were in fact held in Israel Doskow's studio. | |
