Note: | Francisco Dosamantes: In the mid twentieth century, Francisco Dosamantes was one of Mexico’s most famous creative artists. Born in 1911 in Mexico City he studied art there at the Academy of San Carlos and at the University of Mexico. Dosamantes began exhibiting in group shows at the early age of seventeen. He had his first one-man exhibition in 1930 in the Gallery of Modern Art at the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City. During 1932-1937, Dosamantes accepted the position of art instructor in the Cultural Missions and during that time, he also executed murals in the states of Oaxaca, Morelos, Michoacan, Coahuila and Chihuahua. Francisco Dosamantes was a full member of the Taller Grafica Popular and a founding member of the Sociedad para el Impulso de las Artes Plasticas (1948) and the Frente Nacional de Artes Plasticas (1952). Dosamantes was also influential as a teacher of art. Between 1941 and 1945 he taught at various cultural missions and in 1946 he assumed the position of Director at the Taller Artistico Joaquin Clausell, in Campeche. Between 1946 and 1848, Dosamantes participated in various important group exhibitions where his paintings and prints were shown throughout Mexico, Cuba, Spain, the Soviet Union, Switzerland and the United States with the Gallery of Mexican Art, Mexico, D.F. |
In 1939, the Taller de Grafica Popular (TGP), published the famous lithographic poster that Francisco Dosamantes created for an exhibition of 20 lithographs by members of the TGP, entitled, Exposicion 20 Litografias para la Galeria de Arte de la Universidad Nacional, signed with his monogram, 'F2A', Catalogue Raisonne Prignitz #37, The Musem of Fine arts Boston lists an impression of this poster in their collection, Accession Number 2002.19.
As a graphic artist, Francisco Dosamantes was equally accomplished in both linocuts and lithography. In particular, his lithographs, such as this original example, concentrated upon the portrayal of women and are famous for their monumental qualities. Mexican Marketplace depicts a scene at the market with two peasant women, both standing and in conversation. They seem to be eyeing each others merchandise, the fish and eggs.
The graphic art of Francisco Dosamantes is today found in major public collections in New York, Washington, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles. His work is also found in the collections of Mexico City's two largest museums, the Palace of Fine Arts and the Galeria de Arte Mexicano.
Provenance: | Like many prominent Mexican artists of the day, Francisco Dosamantes's original lithographs and paintings were as popular in the United States as in his native land. During the 1930's and 1940's, he was often requested by leading American associations to provide art. This Jose Ignacio Aguirre lithograph entitled, "Mexican Marketplace" was formerly in the collection of the Associated American Artists of New York and published by their New York firm in 1947. All A.A.A. works of art were published in editions ranging from 125 to 250 impressions. |
Associated American Artists: The Associated American Artists label that was included with another impression of this original lithograph read; "Mexican Marketplace, A limited Edition, Signed Original Lithograph by Francisco Dosamantes", dated 1947, edition: 250. It also provided a brief description about the artistic career of Francisco Dosamantes. The Associated American Artists of New York was founded in the mid 1930's. It commissioned original graphic art from such great masters as Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Reginald Marsh and others. During the 1940's, the A.A.A. also published many works for Latin American artists. A fine example is the portfolio entitled, Mexican People published by them in 1946. It contained 12 original lithographs by artists of the Taller de Grafica Popular (TGP) in Mexico City. That set included works by Angel Bracho, Francisco Mora, Raul Anguiano, Pablo O'Higgins, Isidoro O'Campo, Alfredo Zalce, Fernando Castro Pacheco Leopoldo Mendez and Arturo Garcia.
There seems to be some confusion with the attribution for the correct title for certain lithographs published between 1946 and 1947 by the Associated American Artists of New York. During those year, the A.A.A. published a collection of original lithographs by various Latin American artists dealing with portrayals of indigenous people and their culture. Some of these works were published under titles that differed from earlier or later editions printed from the same plates, stones or blocks. We are not always sure why they made these changes, however, there may have been circumstances where it was financially advantageous to publish an edition in different languages. From a marketing perspective, it just makes sense, a title (in English) for their English speaking customers and a title (in Spanish) for the Latin American customers and so on. Remember, we are talking about the Associated American Artists and at the time, they were one of the best firms when it came to marketing their product (ART), and selling it to the broadest audiences. Note the differences below. For example, this original Dosamantes lithograph was published under the title of Mexican Marketplace by the Associated American Artists in 1947 in an edition of 250 impressions. The 'Brooklyn Museum' lists their impression as Mexican Marketplace by Francisco Dosamantes published in 1947, Accession Number: 86.298.1. This lithograph was also published in 1940 (edition unknown), under a different title, Fishwives. The (DMA), Dallas Museum of Art lists their impression as Fishwives by Francisco Dosamantes, 1940, Object Number 1948.3. Another lithograph published by the A.A.A. in 1947 with a different title was Mexican Girl by Jose Ignacio Aguirre. That same Aguirre lithograph was published in 1946, a year earlier, under the titled of Mujer en la Cola del Carbon (Mexican Girl) by Jose Ignacio Aguirre. The 'Museum of Fine Arts', San Francisco lists their 1947 impression under the title, Mexican Girl, Collections #1963.30.13373 and the 'National Gallery of Australia' listed their 1946 impression under the title, Mujer en la Cola del Carbon, Accession No. NGA95.80. Our next example is Luis Arenal's Mujer de Taxco (Woman of Taxco), also published in 1947 under the title of Cabeza de Mujer (Head of a Woman). The 'Museum of Modern Art' lists an impression of Luis Arenal's 1947 signed and titled lithograph as Cabeza de Mujer, MoMa Number 38.1954. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LCMA) lists an impression published in 1947 entitled, Mujer de Taxco, collection, # AC1996.155.1. There are many reliable and educational books written by eminent authors on the subject of printmaking in most good libraries and university institutions. They can provide the information needed in order to authenticate and or evaluate a work of art. The brochures the Associated American Artists sent out to their customers are very useful and informative. The Archives of American Art have documented the records for Associated American Artists dating from 1934 to 1981. |
