Note: | Andrew Donato 'Andy Donato': Canada's most famous political caricaturist, Andrew Donato worked for various commercial art studios before being hired as a graphic artist by the Toronto Telegram. in 1961. He later became art director of one of the newspaper's magazine inserts and began drawing a number of cartoons for the editorial page. When the newspaper folded, Andy Donato, along with several other staff members, moved on to found the Toronto Sun. At the Sun he began drawing daily caricatures, which he has been at work on since that date and they are widely syndicated throughout Canada. In 1976, Andy Donato received the coveted National Newspaper award and has had collections of his drawings published. He has also become a painter of note, having had a number of successful exhibitions in Toronto and area. |
In his comical art, Andy Donato is unafraid to point out any political foible. He has stated, "Like politicians, I have no politics of my own." * His comic genius however was at its sharpest in the 1970's when the target was both flamboyant and aggravating prime minister, Pierre Trudeau. Andy Donato's daily depictions were eagerly looked for throughout the country, except of course by the prime minister and his caucus. Building Kremlins in the Sand is indicative of the artist's great methods from this period. In order to portray Trudeau's sympathetic policies towards the U.S.S.R., Andrew Donato created this delightfully absurd image, complete with Trudeau's famous, ape-like grin. This original drawing was photographed and syndicated in the newspapers throughout Canada.
