This original 19th century Chromolithograph is an advertisement for Scott & Bowne, New York promoting their 'Scott' Emulsion'. The text written on the writing board that the young school girl is holding reads, I like Scott's Emulsion: It is Just as Nice as Cream. Since the firm of Scott & Bowne, New York was established in 1876, the owners, Alfred B. Scott, and Samuel W. Bowne, Scott & Bowne, claimed their product was 'Perfect, Permanent, Palatable'. This die-cut is printed on thick nineteenth century wove paper and with full margins as published on the around 1880-1885. It is a splendid example of the 19th century chromolithographic Die-Cut art and 19th century American advertising. |

Note: | Scott & Bowne, New York: The firm of Scott & Bowne, New York was established in 1876 by Alfred B. Scott (c. 1846 - 1908), and Samuel W. Bowne (c. 1843 - 1910), after they had successfully created a better tasting and smelling emulsion that contained cod-liver oil which they called, 'Scott's Emulsion'. They claimed their customers could not even taste it. An advertisement in the Pacific Medical and Surgical Journal, edited by Henry Gibbons, M. D. and Henry Gibbons, Jr., M. D. Volume 23, published in San Francisco by W. M. Hinton & Co, 1880 contained an advertisement along with commentary by members of the medical profession advertising their product. It read; "Scott's Emulsion Pure Cod Liver Oil with Hypophosphites of Lime and Soda. Perfect, Permanent, Palatable. The high character and wide reputation Scott's Emulsion has attained through the agency of the Medical Profession, and the hearty support they have given it since its first introduction, is a sufficient guarantee of its superior virtues, etc. Scott & Bowne, Manufacturing Chemists, 125 Hudson Street. N. Y". Their trademark included the initials, 'P.P.P' which stood for 'Perfect, Permanent, Palatable'. By the 1890's the New York firm of Scott & Bowne had effectively marketed their product and had factories in Canada, England, Spain Portugal Italy, and France. The 1931 business and finance issue of Time Magazine announced the sale of the famed Scott's Emulsion (cod liver oil) to H. F. Ritchie "Harold Franklin Ritchie' (1881-1933) of Toronto, and F. M. Shoemaker ' Floyd Monroe Shoemaker' (1872- 1952), of Elmira, New York from the firm of Scott & Bowne Inc. of Bloomfield, New Jersey. This original 19th century 'Die-Cut' was created as an advertisement for their 'Scott's Emulsion product' around 1880-1885. The image depicts a young school girl holding a writing board in her hand The board reads; I like Scott's Emulsion: It is Just as Nice as Cream. |
The 'Die-Cut' was perhaps the most complex innovation. It not only used the elaborate techniques of chromolithography, embossing, multiple hues and raised printings to create an almost three dimensional quality, it also developed a method where their images could be cut into shapes during the printing process by a tool called a die. By 1880 the chromolithographic die-cut reached its pinnacle with the most colourful and complex imagery standing out in direct relief. This Scott's Emulsion die-cut is a splendid example of the 19th century chromolithographic Die-Cut art and 19th century American advertising. | |
