Note: |
Etienne Delessert: To those familiar with the art
of illustration the name of Etienne Delessert will require little introduction.
With over eighty illustrated children's books to his credit he is perhaps
the most famous contemporary artist in this field. Largely self-taught,
Etienne Delessert has lived and worked in such locations as Paris, Switzerland,
New York and Connecticut since 1959. A master of animated films, posters,
books and advertising art he has received such prestigious awards as the
Graphic Award of Bologne (1981 & 1989), the Golden Plaque d'Or, Bratislava
(1979) and the Hamilton King Award (1996). |
|
In 1977, Etienne Delessert founded the publishing house,
Editions Tournesol, which promoted the art of young illustrators. In 1995,
the influential art of Etienne Delessert was the subject of a major retrospective
at the Musee des Arts Decoratifs, the Louvre, Paris. His art has also
been the subject of major one man shows in Italy, Canada and the United
States. |

"Crossword" dates from quite early in Etienne Delessert's career.
This original lithograph is an artist proof impression, printed from the
stone before striking the actual edition. Thus printer's ink marks are
visible on the extreme outer margins. It is at present unknown what the
actual edition size is, or, for that matter, if an edition was struck
at all! I can find no reference to "Crossword" in my searches and thus
it must exist in a small number of impressions. What is known is that
"Crossword" exhibits all the wonderful elements of Etienne Delessert's truly unique
visual world. |
Provenance: |
From the collection of Roger Trlak and bearing his inventory
number, 'T-913', on the lower right corner. Roger Trlak (1934-1975) established
the commercial art company of Martin-Trlak in Chicago. In 1972 he also
opened the RST Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona where he exhibited not only
his own large collection of mostly contemporary art but also held important
exhibitions of many modern artists. These Included such major American
and international printmakers as Joseph Hirsch, Luigi Lucioni, Jacob Landau,
Birgit Skiold, Derrick Greaves, Paul Wunderlich and Etienne Delessert. Among Trlak's closest
friends in the arts community were Raphael Soyer, Ivan Albright and Hans
Burkhardt. Contemporary prints and paintings were constantly exhibited
at the RST Gallery until it was closed in 1975 due to Trlak's untimely
death. |
