Auguste Delatre's original etching and drypoint Soir d'Automne (Autumn Evening) hails from the 1859 issue of "L'Artist". In 1859, the French artist, Auguste Delatre contributed two original etchings to the Paris publication, "L'Artiste", these were "Soir d'Automne" and "Solitude". "Soir d'Automne", in particular, displays one of Auguste Delatre's greatest gifts to nineteenth century printmaking. Plate Tone (or, the 'mobile etching' technique, as he termed it) was a method of actually painting ink onto the plate and wiping it to achieve strong tonal values. Each impression was therefore unique. This method directly influenced the rebirth of the monotype in France by such artists as Edgar Degas. This impression bears the publisher's name "L'Artiste" in the upper margin, and the artist's name, "Aug. Delatre pinx. et sc", the title "Soir d'Automne", & the printer's details "Imp. Aug. Delatre"in the lower margin as published by L’Artiste" in Paris at the date stated. It is a fine, original example of the etched and landscape art created by the French artist, Auguste Delatre. |

Note: | Auguste Delatre fills an important role in nineteenth century French art, both as a creative etcher and engraver and as one of the greatest artist's printers of any era. After Auguste Delatre learned to etch and print under the instructions of Charles Jacque and Louis Marvy he set up his own studio in Paris in 1848. Auguste Delatre helped to found the Societe des Aqua fortistes in 1862. Two years later Whistler and Seymour Haden convinced Auguste Delatre to come to London where he taught etching techniques at the South Kensington Museum for several years. Auguste Delatre's French studio was destroyed in the siege of Paris (1870) and he again returned to London for a period of six years. In 1876, Auguste Delatre reopened an etching studio in Montmarte. |
In both Paris and London, Auguste Delatre instructed many great artists on printing techniques and published an influential treatise on this subject. The artists who requested him to print their etched plates reads like a 'who's who' of nineteenth century art. Corot, Adolph Appian, James McNeill Whistler, Charles Meryon, Edouard Manet, Sir Francis Seymour Haden, Theodule Augustin Ribot, Charles Francois Daubigny, Felicien Rops and Felix Bracquemond all pressed for his advice and skills. Auguste Delatre's international stature as a leading printer owed much to his reintroduction of 'plate tone' -- a method of creating tonal values within etching through artistically back wiping the inked plate before printing. In particular, Rembrandt had previously used this technique to great effect. Auguste Delatre was also one of the first European artists to discover and promote the revolutionary art of the Japanese woodcut.
To no surprise Auguste Delatre's own etchings and engravings are brilliant specimens of his vast skills. In "Soir d'Automne" etching, drypoint and extensive plate tone combine to create a superb image of a silent landscape under the setting sun. This famous etching is sometimes referred to under the alternate title, Solitude.

L'Artiste, Paris (1831 - 1904): The Paris art journal, L'Artiste was one of the most-long lasting literary reviews encompassing the visual arts, literature, and music. It is considered by many a most important historical record of French art of the nineteenth century. Founded and directed by Achille Ricourt, this art journal published its first issue in February of 1831, under the title of, "L'Artiste. Journal de la Litterature et des Beaux-Arts" at the address, Rue de Seine-Saint-Germain, 39. Its first vignette, created by Tony Johannot depicted a painter, a sculptor, a writer and a musician accompanied by two women singing. During its long publishing history, the journal was edited by Achille Ricourt (founder/director), Arsene Houssaye (first editor in chief), a post that was also held by, Edouard Houssaye, Auguste de Vaucelle, Theophile Gautier, and others. Each volume consisted of reproductive and most importantly, original prints in the medium of lithography, etching, engraving, and other graphic mediums created by contemporary French artists such as, Paul Delaroche, Tony Johannot, Celestin-Francois Nanteuil, Francois Jules Collignon, Jules Dupre, Hector Martin, Charles Joshua Chaplin, Paul Gavarni, Auguste Delatre, Armand Hubert Simon Leleux, Charles Francois Daubigny, E. Delacroix, Theodore Valerio and many other important artists of the times. "Soir d'Automne" by Auguste Delatre is a striking example of the etched art commissioned by L'Artiste in 1859. L'Artiste published art reviews and literary works by art critics and writers such as, Pierre Jules Theophile Gautier, Charles Baudelaire, Honore de Balzac, A. Houssaye, A. Dumas, and others. L'Artiste later absorbed the "Revue de Paris", another important French literary magazine founded by Louis Desire Vernon in 1829. By the time of its demise in 1904, L'Artiste had published a total of seventy two issues.
