Sycamore Near Reading, Berkshire originates from
a series of large soft ground etchings depicting studies of trees entitled, Forest
Scenery. The entire set was designed by William Havell during the
years 1804, 1805, and 1806 and etched and published William DelaMotte
in great Marlow in 1806. The title page for the series reads;
"To Colonel John Gaspard Le Marchant./ Lt. Governor of the Royal Military
College./ These Studies from Nature are most respectfully dedicated with
his permission by his much much obliged & Obdt., Sert.,/ Willm DelaMotte...".
These beautiful large nature studies are considered to be precursors
for the birth of the British landscape school of art. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
contains an impression from this series in its collection entitled, Landscape with trees,
Girl Crossing Footbridge (1804), accession Number 23.1371. The National Museum of Fine Art,

in its permanent collection, Registration Number 1874.0509.121. |

William Havell: The English painter
and watercolor artist, William Havell was born in Reading in 1782.
He came from a family of distinguished British artists and although
largely self taught, he was a remarkably gifted artist. Throughout
his career, Havell devoted himself to painting landscapes, portraits
and historical subjects. He was one of the founding members of the Society
of Painters in Watercolours at its creation in 1804. His first of many
exhibitions was at Royal Academy in 1804. Havell also exhibited his watercolors
and paintings in other major institutions such as the British Institution,
the Liverpool Academy, the Royal Society of British artists until 1856, a year
before his death in Kensington in 1857. |
|
William Havell made many contributions to publications
containing various topographical views and historical subjects, such as Robert and David Havell's engraved
series of twelve original coloured aquatints published in 1812 for 'A Series of Picturesque
Views on the River Thames' based upon the designs created in 1811 by William Havell.
A second edition of the 'Thames River Views' was later published by Thomas Mclean,
London in 1818. The River & Rowing Museum contains an original impression from this set
in its collection, Accession Number 1997.87.2. The 1814 Monthly and British Register, Volume
38 contains an article concerning the publication by Robert Havell for
a set of original hand coloured aquatints based upon the drawings of
William Havell for the series of "Picturesque Views and Characteristic Scenery of British Villas, of the
Principal Palaces, Noblemen's Mansions and Gentleman's Seats throughout
Great Britain." (1814-1823). The series was completed by other artists
after William Havell accepted a post as draughtsman in 1816 at the Embassy
in China. The list is long but you can find other rare and important engravings
created by Robert Havell, Senior and Robert Havell, Junior based upon the designs of Wm. Havell and
other artists in the collections of the British Museum, the National Museum of Fine Art, Washington,
the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, as well as other important institutions. |
