Adolf Dehn: One of America's premier lithographic
artists of the twentieth century, Adolf Dehn first studied at the Minneapolis
Art Institute and then spent the years of World War One as a conscientious
objector, in 1919, Adolf Dehn received a scholarship to study at the Art Students
League, New York. There he met Boardman Robinson who was instrumental
in publishing Dehn's drawings for the left-wig newspaper, The Masses.
Robinson also introduced Dehn to the master printer, George Miller, and
Dehn created his first lithographs under his instruction in 1920. |
|
In 1921 Adolf Dehn set off for Europe in order, he stated,
"to starve more elegantly." He remained in Europe until 1929, living in
Berlin, Vienna and Paris. During this period he supported himself almost
entirely with his lithographs, most of which were quite satiric in nature.
Adolf Dehn returned to New York and set up his studio there in 1930. During
the Depression years he became famous both for his satire and landscape
lithographs. Beginning in 1941, Adolf Dehn taught at the Colorado Springs
Fine Art Center. He was elected a full member of the prestigious National
Academy in 1961. His original lithographs are included in many major collections,
including the British Museum, The Metropolitan Museum and the Museum of
Modern Art, New York. |
|
During his career, one of Adolf Dehn's biggest supporters was
the famous American art 'scholar, Carl Zigrosser. he wrote, "Dehn is the
Debussy of the lithograph. He has no one approach.. He works with pen
or crayon, with point or flat edge, with wash and splatter and rubbed
tones, he rubs and picks and scratches and scrapes... whatever is at hand.
He caresses or attacks the stone according to his mood." * These words
may help to explain the wonderful textures within this original Dehn lithograph.(Clinton
Adams, American Lithographers, 1900-1960, Albuquerque, University
of New Mexico Press, 1983, pp. 71 & 72). |
|
While most of Adolf Dehn's satirical lithographs were confined
to the streets, shops and galleries of Paris and New York, his landscape
art drew upon his regular visits to either Minnesota or Colorado. Snow
Mountain is one of Dehn's last lithographs of Colorado. It shows that
even in the latter part of his life, Dehn's mastery of tone and texture was
without equal. |
