Thomas Anthony Dean's original engraving, Poppy (Flowers of Loveliness) is based upon a design created by the British artist, Fanny Corbaux also listed as Marie Francoise Catherine Doetter Corbaux. This impression is printed upon early 19th century wove paper and with full margins, bearing the title, "Poppy", the artists' signatures, "T. A. Dean Sct", & "Miss Corbaux Delt.", as well as the name of The London Printing and Publishing Company within the plate as published by John Tallis and Company for Flowers of Loveliness in 1854. The scene depicts two young women resting. It represents a superb, original example of the 19th century art by the British artists, T. A Dean and Fanny Corbaux.

Note: Thomas Anthony Dean 'T. A. Dean': : A fine 19th century printmaker, Thomas Anthony Dean was also known as T. A. Dean, exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Suffolk Street Gallery. His oeuvre mainly consisted of portraits, and some figure studies in the medium of line, and stipple engraving based upon his own designs and the designs of Sir Joshua Reynolds, Sir Godfrey Kneller, Sir Thomas Lawrence, William Owen, Sir Anthony Van Dyck, Sir Peter Lely, Emma Eleonora Kendrick, Fanny Corbaux, and other fine British painters and illustrators. Dean created individual engravings, as well as for such fine works as, "Flowers of loveliness, Forty Groups of Female Figures Emblematic of Flowers, Designed by first Artists, Expressly for this Work: with poetical illustrations, by Letitia E. Landon, The Countess of Blessington, and Thomas Haynes Bayley, Esq., Dedicated to Her Most Gracious Majesty, The Queen, John Tallis and Company " (1854), "Heath's Book of Beauty: with Beautifully Finished Engravings, from Drawings" (1837), "The Pious Minstrel: a collection of sacred poetry (1833), and other fine illustrated volumes. This original Thomas Anthony Dean engraving entitled, Poppy hails from the large portfolio of forty engravings of female figures entitled, "Flowers of Loveliness" published in 1854, Marie Francoise Catherine Doetter Corbaux 's original paintings and watercolours are included in such major collections as The British Museum, The Victoria and Albert Museum, London, The National Portrait Gallery, London, The Royal Society, London, and other public and private institutions.
  Marie Francoise Catherine Doetter Corbaux 'Fanny Corbaux': A notable 19th century English painter, watercolour artist, illustrator, and author, Marie Francoise Catherine Doetter Corbaux, also known as Miss Fanny Corbaux studied at the National Gallery and the British Institution. She was a member of the New Society of Painters in Water-Colours and an honorary member of the Society of British Artists. Although Corbaux created paintings, watercolours and illustrations of various subjects, her artistic oeuvre mainly consisted of portrayals of beautiful women, children and some male portraits. She exhibited her works at the Society of British artists, the Royal Academy, The British Institution, and the New Society of Painter in Water-Colours, later known as the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. Mostly self taught, and with little formal training Marie Francoise Catherine Doetter Corbaux was a gifted artist, and during her career, was awarded the 'Silver medal of the Society of Arts' (1827), the 'Silver Palette' (1827), the' Silver Isis Medal' (1827-1828), and a 'Gold Isis Medal' (1830) for several outstanding compositions. Two of those medals were for miniature portraits, a medium in which she was extremely accomplished, and highly regarded. Today, Marie Francoise Catherine Doetter Corbaux 's original paintings and watercolours are included in such major collections as The National Gallery of Canada, The British Museum, The National Portrait Gallery, London, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and other public and private institutions.
  As an author Fanny Corbaux wrote a number of papers for periodicals, journals and literary societies, such as the "Edinburgh New Philosophical Journal", and "The Rephaim, and their connection with Egyptian History" (1851-1852), which was reprinted form the "Journal of Sacred Literature", volumes I. II, & III, The Athenaeum also published her "letters on the Physical Geography of the Exodus". As an Illustrator, Miss Corbaux's brilliant illustrations appeared in such popular works as, "Flowers of loveliness, Forty Groups of Female Figures Emblematic of Flowers, Designed by first Artists, Expressly for this Work: with poetical illustrations, by Letitia E. Landon, The Countess of Blessington, and Thomas Haynes Bayley, Esq., Dedicated to Her Most Gracious Majesty, The Queen, John Tallis and Company (1854), Thomas Moore's "Pearls of the East; or Beauties from Lalla Rookh, with twelve large portraits designed by Fanny Corbaux, and drawn on stone by her sister and fellow artist, Louisa Corbaux" (1837), "Friendship's offering; and winter's wreath: a Christmas and New Year;s present, for MDCCCXXXV II" (1837), "Forget Me Not: a Christmas, New Year's and birthday present, for MDCCCXXXVII" (1836), "The Violet: a Christmas and New-Year's gift, or birth-day present" (1939), and other fine illustrated volumes. Flowers of Loveliness: Near the beginning of Queen Victoria's long reign there appeared a large portfolio of forty engravings of female figures that were unequaled for their delicacy of line and composition. Published by John Tallis, London, Edinburgh, Dublin, and New York in 1854 under the title of, Flowers of Loveliness, Forty Groups of Female Figures Emblematic of Flowers, Designed by first Artists, Expressly for this Work: with poetical illustrations, by Letitia E. Landon, The Countess of Blessington, and Thomas Haynes Bayley, Esq., Dedicated to Her Most Gracious Majesty, The Queen. The theme of this set was to unite the beauty of women with that of flowers. The designers that were commissioned included some of the finest British artists of the day, such as, Edmund Thomas Parris (1793-1873), Thomas Uwins (1782-1857), Kenny Meadows (1790-1874), Eliza Sharpe (1796-1874), Fanny Corbaux (1812-1883), and others. The engravers were no less distinguished as they included Henry Thomas Ryall (1811-1867), William Thomas Fry (1789-1843), Thomas Woolnoth (1785-1838), James Thomson (1788-1850), William Henry Egleton, Thomas Anthony Dean (1801-1860), George Adcock, and others. This original engraving bears the title, "Poppy", the artists' signatures, "T. A. Dean Sct", & "Miss Corbaux Delt.", as well as the name of The London Printing and Publishing Company as published by John Tallis and Company for Flowers of Loveliness in 1854. The text included with each engraving contained poetry, and sometimes detailed information concerning each flower. The scene depicts two young women resting. The following is the first stanza from the poem;

"The Poppy.
Where is the bee its sweetest music bringing,--
The music living in its busy wings,
Like the small fountain's low perpetual singing,
Counting the quiet hours that noontide brings?..."

  John Tallis: The London publisher John Tallis was considered one of the most sought after cartographers of the early 19th century. From 1838 to 1851 John Tallis published maps, genre, theatrical portraits, views, and other historical works under his various firms, 'L. Tallis', 'Tallis & Co.', 'John Tallis', 'J. & F. Tallis publishing company', 'John Tallis & Co.' (London & New York). In his book, Hamlet and the Visual Arts, 1709-1900, published 2002, the author Alan R. Young writes that John Tallis established a new publishing company (in partnership with Ephraim Tipton Brain), 'The London Printing and Publishing Co.', London and New York in December of 1853. An original engraving, Poppy hails from the large portfolio of forty engravings of female figures entitled, Flowers of Loveliness first published by John Tallis and Company, London, Edinburgh, Dublin, and New York. The engravings bear the title, the artists' names, and the name of ' The London Printing and Publishing Company' within the plate.
:Provenance: This original engraving entitled, Poppy from Flowers of Loveliness, hails from the collection of Richard H. Harris, Principal of the High School Vienna County Elgin, Upper Canada, February 25th, 1856.

Condition: Printed upon early 19th century wove paper and with full margins, bearing the title, "Poppy", the artists' signatures, "T. A. Containing the usual traces of foxing one finds in wove paper of this era (particularly in the outer margins), else a finely printed, early impression and in good condition throughout.
