Maxime de Thomas: An important late nineteenth and
early twentieth century painter, lithographic artist, illustrator and
theater designer, Maxime de Thomas's distinctive art gained widespread
recognition in the 1890's era. In France, this decade was greatly dominated
by theories and styles of artists associated with the Art Nouveau movement.
Despite being one of the closest of Toulouse-Lautrec's friends, however,
De Thomas was largely unimpressed by the decorative qualities of Art Nouveau
and claimed that his inspiration was guided by artists of earlier generations,
particularly Goya, Delacroix and Manet. Jalousie (Jealousy) is a striking
example of Maxime de Thomas's art, where every line seems to emphasize the atmosphere
of distrust and suspicion. |
|
An important exhibition of Maxime De Thomas's art took place
in Paris in 1900. This led to his appointment as the principal artist
for the Theatre des Arts. De Thomas also gained an international reputation
for his illustrations to the literary works of Regnier and Paul Adam. |
