Andre Dunoyer de Segonzac: A leading French painter
and etcher of the twentieth century, Andre Dunoyer de Segonzac studied
at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris (1901 - 1906), under J. P. Laurens
and Charles Guerin. His first illustrations were published in 1910. Dunoyer
de Segonzac's first etching was made in 1919, after brief lessons from
J. E. Laboureur. A master of both portrait and landscape etching, Dunoyer
de Segonzac's art became tremendously influential for a generation of
artists searching for an alternative to abstraction. Called both a 'neo-Realist'
and a 'neo-Classicist', Andre Dunoyer de Segonzac etched directly from nature
and created both a brilliant and spontaneous imagery where an economy
of line was crucial. His mastery is clearly apparent in Figure Study. |
|
As well as creating a number of fine, individual etchings,
Dunoyer de Segonzac also illustrated a number of masterful fine art books
with his etchings such as, Les Croix de Bois (1921), La Treille
Muscate (1932), Les Georgiques (1944) and Andre Gide's, Thesee
(1947). During his career he created an oeuvre of over 900 original etchings
and drypoints. |
|
Andre Dunoyer de Segonzac was a full member of the Societe
des Peintres-Graveurs Francais, the Royal Academy, London, and the Academie
Royale, Brussels. Today his etched art is included in many major galleries
throughout the world, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and
the Art Institute of Chicago. |
|
In all probability this very small edition etching was created
by Andre Dunoyer de Segonzac between 1925 and 1930. The Paris publisher, Marcel
Guiot, was active at this time and commissioned a number of prints from
both Dunoyer de Segonzac and Pablo Picasso. This important etching bears
the blindstamp of Guiot in the lower right corner of the margins. |

"The number of people who flatter themselves that
they have invented or discovered something in art is just about the
same as the number of fools. A strange coincidence." * ---Andre Dunoyer de Segonzac |

Printed upon hand-made paper with the 'Van der Zonin' watermark
and with large, deckled margins as published in Paris between 1925 and
1930. Bearing the blindstamp, "Marcel Guiot, Editeur, Paris", in the lower
right corner (under the matte). Signed in pencil and numbered, '12/25'
by the artist under the lower plate-mark. Figure Study contains
very faint traces of matte burning in the outer margins as well as a small
vertical crease caused by printing pressure, else a finely printed, strong
impression and in very good condition throughout. This original etching
represents both a scarce and important example of the art of Andre Dunoyer
de Segonzac, one of France's greatest masters of the twentieth century. |
