Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita's woodcuts of birds and animals stand at the forefront of his creative art. Form, character and essence is defined in striking simplicity. In Parkiet (Parrot or Parakeet), for example, the spirit of this bird is brilliantly rendered by vigorous contrasts of light and dark and by sharp horizontal, diagonal and vertical lines. This original woodcut is a masterwork of Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita's art.

In 1928 the Dutch publisher, J. A. A. M. van Es, Wassenaar, created an illustrated book on the graphic art of Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita. Accompanying the illustrations was descriptive text by A. van der Boom and T. B. Roorda. The book was not published in a specific edition, however, it is known to be very scarce. Jessurun de Mesquita contributed three original woodcuts to this valuable book. Parkiet (Parrot or Parakeet) is one of these three original woodcuts from this source.

Note:	Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita: A major twentieth century Dutch artist, Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita applied to Amsterdam's Rijksakademie at the age of fourteen. He was, however, rejected and spent the following two years as an architect's apprentice. Samuel de Mesquita then trained at a school of applied arts and later entered the state teacher's training college.
	In the last decade of the nineteenth century Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita produced his first woodcuts and etchings, as well as batiks and block-printed fabrics which he sold to various design stores in Amsterdam. At this time he also began teaching at the School of Architecture and Ornamental Design in Haarlem.
	In his art, Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita was known for his superb simplicity and his complete concentration upon the spirit of his subject. This is evident in his portraits, self-portraits, figure studies and compositions and depictions of floral forms. Throughout the years, a primary influence upon De Mesquita's art were the animals in Amsterdam's Artis Zoo. He frequently took his students there and created an outstanding oeuvre of woodcuts capturing the spirit and soul of many animals.
	Being from a Jewish family, Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita was forced to live a life of withdrawal after the Nazi invasion of Holland in 1940. Tragically, in early1944, he was apprehended along with his wife and son and transported to the concentration camp at Auschwitz. Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita died there several days after his arrival on February 11.
	The art of Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita quite possibly may have passed into obscurity if not for the efforts of his most famous student, Mauritus Cornelis Escher (1896-1972). M. C. Escher regarded Samuel de Mesquita as both his mentor and friend and was personally responsible for rescuing works of art from the De Mesquita home and for promoting his work in post-war exhibitions. Today the woodcuts, etchings, lithographs, drawings and paintings of Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita have assumed their place among the masterworks of early twentieth century Dutch art.

Condition:	Printed upon thin Japan paper and with full margins as created by the artist for the 1928 book, S. Jessurun de Mesquita. Containing slight foxing in the outer margins, else in good condition throughout.
