Note: | Francois de Herain: A twentieth century French painter, sculptor and printmaker, Francois de Herain studied art in Paris. He began exhibiting there around 1900 and was elected an Associate of the Societe Nationale in 1912. By the mid 1920's de Herain was an annual exhibitor at such major expositions as the Societe Nationale, the Salon des Independants and the Salon d'Automne. In the course of the artist's career he travelled extensively in Europe and North Africa. |
In his paintings, etchings and engravings Francois de Herain was highly regarded for his landscapes and figure studies. Mendiante des pays Envalvis is a superb example of his skills in the drypoint medium where is each line expresses the long and harsh life of his subject. This original drypoint engraving was commissioned by Byblis in Paris in 1922. During the 1920's this publisher frequently commissioned engravings, etchings, woodcuts and lithographs from France's best known artists. These original works of art were published in limited editions of five hundred impressions. | |
